How many bridesmaids is too many?

C, on January 3, 2021 at 1:24 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

We are having a semi-destination wedding (3 hours from home) and all guests will have to travel. We are inviting around 110 people (this number includes the bridal party). I would expect with COVID that 60-80 people will actually attend (maybe 90 if COVID is better by the wedding). Is 6 bridesmaids and 5 groomsmen too many?

Your BP should be people you trust and love, and there is no number on that.

Keep in mind, the bigger the party, the more schedules you have to coordinate and the more opinions you receive.

Traditionally it's 1 on each side per 50 guests.

Definitely not too many. We are having 8 groomsmen and 6 bridesmaids for our upcoming big wedding. We originally had 110 guests but currently restrictions are allowing 80

I don't think so. I've seen weddings with 10 or more bridesmaids and groomsmen

Not too many. I will agree with the first poster as long as the choices are people that you genuinely love.

Not too many at all. As many people as you feel close to and want to share closely in your day with is great.

Agree with the others- I don’t think it’s too many. Just keep in mind the bigger the bridal party, the bigger the expense for you & your fiancé.

I've never heard this - could you provide your source? I'm interested in reading on it.

It was custom up until the the early 2000s to do so. I haven't seen a written source outside of old magazines and etiquette books.

In the medieval times, bridesmaids originated as a way to distract evil spirits from kidnapping the bride so all were dressed identical. Nowadays anything goes.

Yes, I am aware of the origin of bridesmaids. However, I've never heard 1 for 50 - I'd like the sources please.

Five bridesmaids and six groomsmen is totally fine. I think when you get to like 10-12 or more then that is way too many. We had five people on each side for our wedding and it worked out perfectly. What matters is that the people you pick are those closest to you that you can't imagine not having standing by your wedding.

You can still provide citation information - I have access to libraries and inter-library loan should that be necessary.

Interesting! I have heard of 1 usher per 50 guests, but I've never heard of determining the number of wedding party members on each side based on guest count.

This is the one I had heard and the blogs she's using as a reference don't give 1/50 bridesmaids as a rule
