How many certified copies should I get of our marriage license?

We're applying for a marriage license next month. Can anyone recommend how many certified copies we should get out of the gate? In order to change my name, how many different outlets need a certified copy vs. a regular copy? Any help would be nice. I'd just like to know how much cash I should bring.

    I tell my couples to get three, and put one in a safe deposit box.

    Most places I've seen that require a certified copy to change your name give it back. I would still get 2 or 3 in case you have to send one out (for your passport for example). I like Celia's advice to put one in the safe deposit box.

    I've only needed one. The only place that needed it and I couldn't get it back right away was for my passport, so I did that last.

    ETA - and I got my copy back in the mail without any issue.

    I ordered 4 and still have 4. No one actually wanted to keep the copy when I went to SSA and DMV. Good to have though!

    As for cash...search your local city, county, or state government website. They will tell you the procedure, hours of operation, and cost.
