How many copies of your marriage certificate did you need?

SummerS, on March 16, 2016 at 3:35 PM Posted in Married Life 0 12

I'm going to start the name change process after we get back from vacation next month, so I want to get everything ordered so there's time to get it back in the mail and have in order already when we get back. How many copies of your marriage certificate did you end up needing when you went through this process? I feel like I've heard to get at least 3 before, but I don't know if I just made that up. Thanks Smiley smile

ETA: and also a follow up question in one of my comments below...do I need to change my name on my home deed/title? Where do I do that?? We may be selling in the next couple of years so would that cause a problem...never thought about that one before.

I believe we have 2 or 3 copies, but I only ever needed the one. Everywhere I brought it they just made a copy and gave it back to me.

Only 1. Don't waste your money getting multiples.

ETA: for the first 3 months or so, I kept it in the glovebox of my car. There were times I'd be at the bank and they'd give me a hard time for an account in another name. So I just whipped out my marriage certificate and they pretty much honored anything.

Just 1. Every place I took just needed to see the original and make a copy of it. I waited to do my passport last because I had to mail the original in with the change of name but I received it back it just took awhile which is why I did it last.

I tell my couples to get three; one for a safe place and two for you to show to everyone who needs them. If you're going through military or visa issues, I'd do four. They really don't cost very much and it's cheaper to do it all at once.

I have never needed more than the one-- married 17 years.

I have 4. I only needed one. the first copy was the most expensive, and then the additional copies were $5. I figured it was cheaper to buy extra now instead of getting an extra down the line.

Thanks for the feedback Smiley smile From what I can tell, the clerk's office only charges $6 per copy and I only need it for the basic stuff...SS, DMV, passport and then credit card/banks. Hmmm, do you have to contact someone to change your name on a home deed? I never thought about that one...I may sell in the next couple of years so would there be a problem there I wonder? Where do you even change that?

I paid for one certified copy and used that for everything. Each place just needed to make a copy of it, they didn't require the original, so I still have it. The last place will be updating my passport, but I do believe they send everything back to you.

I'd get 2... most places take a copy. I did have to send one original away to update my U.S. passport, knowing the govt processes, i'm not convinced I'll get it back Lol

I'd get 2 or maybe 3 - I mailed one away to get my new passport and I definitely needed a second one for the bank and such while i was waiting for that one to come back.

You don't need to change your name on the deed, I'm pretty sure when you sell your home you'll have to just show them your marriage certificate. I'm not an attorney or mortgage officer, but I do home equity loans so we pull deeds and record mortgages and never had an issue- we just have you sign everything as " Sally Maiden name AKA Sally Married name" Which is annoying when you're signing 800 documents Smiley smile

    Again...not an expert on this.
