How many flowers per bouquet/centerpiece?

Kate, on April 29, 2015 at 6:37 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

Hi Everyone!

How many of you have successfully diy'd your own wedding flowers? I'm trying to budget everything out to see whether or not it's cost effective to diy my flowers or if I should just let a florist handle it.

I'd like to diy my flowers if at all possible because I think it's a fun, bonding experience for myself, my family, and the bridal party and it can save me some money!

That being said --- I'm not sure how many flowers should go in each bouquet so I'm not sure how many flowers to estimate purchasing. I'm afraid to ask a florist because I'm sure they'll try and convince me to just use their services instead.

I've included by pinterest bouquet board so you all can get an idea of the bouquet size I'm hoping to achieve. Not HUMONGOUS but not teeny either.

https://www.pinterest.com/kateblanden/bouquet-ideas/

I've got to do 20 centerpieces, 7 bridesmaids bouquets, 8 boutonnieres, and my bouquet.

Does anyone have better eyeballing skills than I do?

I guess it depends on the look you're going for. We're very laid back, off-beat, backyard wedding and my centerpieces are going to consist of a various amount of flowers... anywhere from one to five. My bouquet is just going to go with a loose wildflower style... not too large, and the same goes for my maid of honor (only bm) ... just smaller. Look some stuff up on pinterest to get a better idea.

I had a TON of flowers and only had 10 centerpieces. Honestly, if you're looking for decent sized centerpieces it is going to take a long time to do your flowers. I am attaching a picture of my centerpieces...to do those, plus my bouquet, 3 bridesmaid bouquets and 3 corsages literally took like 6-8 hours and was REALLY stressful. Keep in mind you will also have to worry about transporting that many without spilling them or damaging the flowers and keeping them cool before the wedding.

If you look at my pinterest board, I've got a pretty well-defined sense of what I want. It's just difficult to tell what I'm looking at from a picture so I'm trying to reach out to other brides who have arranged their own flowers before. How much is filler? How many roses/gardenias/hyacinth/dendrobium orchids would I need to get that amount of volume? Etc. That's the kind of questions I'm asking.

@Heather -- That's true. Thankfully I will have a lot of helping hands so help lessen the load. Plus, I'll need something to do with my hands to reduce stress -- so I'm actually glad that you said it takes a while. I'll want to keep myself busy. Smiley tongue

Numbers answer for you. This is how many dahlias I had. It was at least 100. I also had 100 roses, 100 carnations, some babies breath and a few random other things. Again, mine was only 10 centerpieces. Edit: my comment about it taking forever was with there being a few of us. The phrase too many cooks in the kitchen also

Applies to flowers too. If I hadn't grown my flowers I would have for sure hired a florist. It was the most stressful part of my wedding and being rushed the day before the wedding is a lot of work.

It depends on the size of the flowers you want to use and how much filler you're planning on using. You seem to lean towards romantic traditional wedding staples like roses, peonies, and calla lilies with greenery and small filler flowers like baby's breath- but keep in mind peonies won't be in season and will be very expensive. It's always best for your budget to go with seasonal flowers. Here's a generalized chart on DIY bouquets it should be about accurate for traditional arrangements.

@marissa, yes I did! My parents let me dig up a huge section of their yard and plant roughly 90 dahlia plants. Our yard looked so amazing all summer.

@Heather -- Oh my goodness, you are amazing!! If I could trust myself to not kill the flowers, I'd try that too -- but I don't have anything close to a green thumb. Wow!! I'm so impressed!

I included my inspiration pics to give you an idea!

    - My bridal bouquet will have 5 hydrangeas, 7-8 roses, and 8-9 delphinium blossoms (1st pic)

    - My BM bouquets will have 4 hydrangeas with baby's breath and 8-9 delphinium blossoms. They'll be a little bigger than they would have been otherwise because they are doubling as our low centerpieces. (2nd pic)

    - My tall centerpieces will have 11-13 hydrangea, 11-12 roses, and baby's breath

@Heather, I didn't know you also GREW your flowers!! That's wonderful, and they're seriously gorgeous.

@Kate, i ordered from both Sam's Club and Fifty Flowers, and my numbers broke down as such: 30 hydrangea, 200 roses, 100 stock, 50 lisianthus, and 200 stems of Israeli ruscus greenery. I wanted fairly good sized bouquets and arrangements... 1 bridal bouquet, 4 BM bouquets, 1 Jr. BM bouquet, 5 wrist corsages, 10 bouts, 8 centerpieces, 3 large arrangements for cake/guest book/bar, about 15 single stem arrangements, single stem and greenery for chairs along our ceremony aisle, and 2 smaller arrangements for the ceremony arch, which I didn't plan for they were just extra. I also ordered a fresh garland for our arch separately. We ended up having plenty of flowers to go around, although I believe you can never have too many! Mine was honestly a case of champagne floral taste on a beer budget... my floral vision FAR exceeded my budget. My family and I really enjoy arranging flowers and didn't find it stressful, but I definitely agree with Heather in that the whole "too many cooks in the kitchen" thing applies here. We had 5 tops the day of, and I think any more than that would be overwhelming. For reference, I had flowers delivered Wednesday to be arranged Thursday for a Saturday wedding. They held up wonderfully. I should have our photos back this week sometime and I can update my post with some when I do.

Oh, and I'll add that the base of our bouquets was 3 hydrangea for bridal, 2 for BM, and 1 for Jr BM

Hi Heather! I’m planning something similar but I’m alarmed- you planted 90 dahlia bushes but only harvested 100 dahlias?? Could I email you for questions/tips?
