How many of you went over budget?

Kristen, on November 19, 2017 at 6:44 PM Posted in Planning 1 102

I always hear about this happening, but it really hit me when I got my florist quote today. I know flowers are expensive, but this is over 2x what I was budgeting, which was already A LOT! I've been pretty spot on with estimating other quotes, so this was really disheartening. Especially with how much I've been dreaming about beautiful, romantic flowers for our day. And it's one of our last few vendors to book, so there's not much wiggle room in the budget.

I know we'll figure it out, just needed to rant. I can't be the only one though! Did you go over? By how much? What did you decide to splurge on anyway?

We didn't have a set budget, just kind of agreed we'd stay under 30k ... that's not happening. Looking at numbers right now, and we're 2 weeks out, it looks like we'll come in around 40k .

We have the money in the bank so it's not like we're going into debt over it, it just would've been better to spend that money on other important things! But oh well.

ETA1: my parents and FILs have helped us out a little, but we are looking at total numbers, doesn't matter where it's coming from

ETA2: We're delaying our honeymoon because of this Smiley tongue

Like pp said..I don't have a budget, but had a number in mind...I'm probably going to go over that number by $10-15k, but it's ok. I think it is hard to set a realistic budget when you don't reeaally know how much florists and photographers cost. You're not alone!

We did, but we had an ideal number and a much larger maximum amount we felt ok spending. Looks like we're going to fall right in the middle of the two numbers.

We have a budget that has had a couple adjustments once we realized how everything wedding related is priced.

One thing my coordinator suggested and you may want to research is ordering bulk flowers and hiring a florist to do the arrangements.

My grandparents house cost $23k, in the early 50s. We went over by $23k. Oh well ...

@Olivia, that's EXACTLY where I'm at right now! Spending so much on custom invites is one of my biggest regrets, and now I'm stressing about the honeymoon, too. We already put down deposit for our trip, plus a family member booked us a week at their timeshare as a gift. At this rate we'll pretty much be able to cover flights and food and that's it.

We are going to go over budget. We have been super reasonable with everything so far, nothing we have considered a true splurge. Most of the vendors we have booked so far have been at the low end of the quotes for weddings in this area. We are willing not to do any crazy splurges but do not want to cut the guest list and do not want to be bad hosts so we are just going to keep booking what we need to book and keep being reasonable, but it seems we will exceed our budget by a few thousand

Our target was 10k with a flex up to 15k, not counting anything we were gifted by our families. We ended up being in the middle of the two, and with family contributions total cost was around 17k. (Family contributed ~4500.)

We said we wanted to stay under 20K but it looks like we might actually end up just over that. MY parents generously offered to pay for the venue (which includes the catering) and its about 2/3 of our budget. So if we do go slightly over that I am not overly concerned. We've been very conscious about making the best decisions for both our budget and for our guests comfort.

We did, but we had a pretty flexible budget to begin with. Every decision we made we thought about whether or not that extra cost was worth it to us. The difference is that we had the money already in savings and it didn't affect our other saving plans. We spent about $8,000 more than we originally thought we would, but a big part of that was our venue and in-house catering and we chose to spend more there because we couldn't imagine getting married anywhere else.

Yeah... my dad set a budget for what he was paying for. It was more of a suggestion. (has been my whole life). He LOVED everything at the wedding.

My dream goal was 6k. (hahahahahaha)

    My realistic budget was 12k.

We ended up at like 16k.

We had to invite certain people that were a must. We required specific venue things that were "included" but needed adjusting for better booze etc. I did add a photobooth that was $400 and the pictures are awesome.

Most of the must haves or extras that bumped the budget up were related to guest satisfaction.

We also have a number we would like to spend and an amount we refuse to go over. So far we are coming in under the lowest end of our budget. How many rsvps will determine if we hit the top tier budget

When we were young and innocent, our budget was $10,000.

Reality: scraping to keep everything (honeymoon and rings excluded) under 20.

At the moment, with what we've paid and outstanding balances, it is looking like we will be approximately $1300 over budget. We aren't too concerned however, we had to make a venue change after setting our budget early on. The new venue was $1500 more than the original venue and didn't include all of the things the first one did so that added some costs as well!

Yes, we had our "hahaha" budget of $6000 for everything. Then a realistic budget of 10k, and it still looks like we will be going over by about 2-3k.

Unexpectedly, FH's parent's offered us a very generous amount of money this past week, so we are no longer sweating, but yes. Everything is hella expensive.

Like many people, we had an ideal amount, and an absolutely do not cross amount.

We wound up in between the two. We probably could have come in right around the ideal amount since we had about a 50% RSVP yes rate. But at that point I had gone full "fuck it" and decided instead of leaving things as is, we should just add 3 more appetizers, more drink choices, an edible favor, more BP gifts, ceremony florals, and go bigger with bouquets and centerpieces. I don't regret it, everything was worth it.

Didn’t have a strictly set budget, more of a “ehhh it would be nice not to go over this amount.” We came in several thousand under that number. I? will never understand why people make budgets if they don’t actually stick to them.

When we first started planning I wanted to keep the budget to $15k... when I started looking at venues and realized we live in NY where everything is expensive for no reason, we realized it wouldn't be enough. Our venue alone is going to be $15k. It'll be a miracle if we keep the whole day under $30k.

    I went over by 15-20k

I splurged on my dress, flowers, and decor
