how many yarmulkes or kippot to provide?

Gwen, on June 10, 2012 at 9:10 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 2

This issue has been puzzling me for a little while. We're getting married in a Reform Jewish synagogue, and many of our guests are not Jewish. However, we'd like to provide special kippot that guests can use at the ceremony and take home if they'd like. I know how to crochet, and decided to make them by hand (I've already made many). But I'm having trouble estimating when to stop.... Should I make 1 per male guest? Plus some extra? 1 per guest regardless of gender? Every time I think it would make sense to let myself off the hook (haha) and give them to only/mostly to men, I'm spotted crocheting by another very excited female friend or relative, and many of them appear to want them. Some of my friends say non-Jewish guests are unlikely to take kippot, but non-Jewish friends of mine seem intrigued by them and claim they want them because they're so unique. Help! Can anyone tell me what is normal to order, and give me insight into what to expect?

We are ordering 1 per guest, both male and female. Our rabbi suggested that, stating that women too like to wear them, especially if you hand crochet them, they'd like that!

Ordering 1 kippa per guest is overkill. We had 88 men RSVP yes and ordered 75 kippot assuming not all would take one. 54 were taken (which could’ve been by men or women) and were leftover with 21. So that’s a utilization rate of 72% of what we ordered.
