How much did you spend on your dress?

I'm shopping for dresses and am wondering what is a reasonable amount to spend on a dress. I know it depends on my budget but I'm not going to buy a dress based solely on cost --I won't pay up the ying yang either. The dress I like is significantly more expensive than what I was hoping to pay...

I'm shopping for dresses and am wondering what is a reasonable amount to spend on a dress. I know it depends on my budget but I'm not going to buy a dress based solely on cost --I won't pay up the ying yang either. The dress I like is significantly more expensive than what I was hoping to pay (~$2300). If you've gone over budget for your dress, how much did you pay (if you feel comfortable sharing)? Was it worth it?

My original budget was $800, based on the stuff I liked online. Then I decided I wanted to stay under a $1000 for EVERYTHING- under garments, alterations, etc... So, I thought bringing it down to $500 was more reasonable. I can't remember the original retail on my dress, all I know is they were having a sale at DB's and it was $466, I got another 10% from some e-mail because I left something in my cart making my sub-total $419, with taxes it was $454. Alterations ran $150. Under garments $130. Shoes $50. Veil $70. Jewelry $10. Sweater $50. Headpiece $13. Sash $16. TOTAL= $943!! That's not including purse, garter or sixpence... but all of those I feel are more optional. More info than you asked for, but it'll give you an idea on the rest of the costs associated with your attire too. Though, to be fair, I tried to keep it REALLY cheap.... you could totally opt for more expensive stuff, but I didn't want to spend too much and I really liked what I picked out too.

My dress was about 1500 before alterations or accessories. I had a budget of under 2000 for everything.

$1519.... originally. Bridal shop offered a small discount, but it basically worked out to save tax. Haven't been in for alterations yet, and I have yet to purchase a veil.

My dress story is similar to Dreamers. My mom gave me a budget of $2,000 and I was to pay the rest..I fell in love with a $5,000 Lazaro dress, and they offered me the sample (in perfect condition since they barely received it the week prior) for 25% off. So with the discount and my moms generous contribution, I spent ~$2,000 after taxes (this doesn't include alterations or any accessories).

I just bought my dress on Saturday and I could not be happier! The dress was $1,375.00 before tax. After tax, it came to about $1,480 or something. (I say or something as my parents are giving me a lump sum for the wedding but have yet to give it to us so my mom put it on her credit card and I do not have the receipt in front of me). I live in the DC metro area and knew I wouldn't find a beautiful dress for cheap unless I drove away from the city or went to a sample sale. Not really willing to do either, my budget was set at $1,500. Alterations will probably be about $600 but I am comfortable with that and the dress makes me happy. My wedding day is going to be the one day in my life where I am photographed a gazillion times. I wanted to feel pretty but not break the bank.

$650 w/ tax and garment bag. However, I have not had alterations done yet. Based on what David's Bridal has told me, I'm factoring another $180 or so into that. Then I still need undergarments and shoes.

    Original budget: $300

What my fiance said: money is no object

So far I've paid a total of $242 for my dress and veil. My dress was 33% off on the clearance rack and my veil was $30 from David's Bridal. I'm wearing the shoes I wore to my Master's degree graduation ceremony so the only things I have left are a necklace, gloves, and alterations.

My budget was originally $1000+ the cost of alterations and + accessories.

I found my dress on sale for $499. With the belt and veil I ended up paying just over $800. Thank goodness I came under budget because just a few weeks after that I ended up with some majorly expensive car problems, and ended up getting sick and losing hours at work. What timing. Ugh.

But anyway, it all worked out and I'm happy!

My budget was $3k, but my dress and veil together were only $1900! I think you have to weigh a lot of factors. Blingy dresses will cost more, ballgowns will cost more (more fabric, more spend), and definitely take into account things like handmade lace, hand beading, etc. If you're willing to pay for the quality, the last thing you should take into account is how long you're actually wearing it. That's where I came in at...I couldn't justify $12k for a Pnina Tornay gown, even if I HAD the money to blow on it, because at the end of the day it's like 8 hrs you wear it and then possibly never again? (Unless you do trash the dress shoot and can you really do that in a 12k gown?!)

    I hope this helps you!

I had a budget of $2000 and I paid $1800. I bought it during a trunk show and it technically wasn't released yet outside of trunk shows so my mom asked how much it is now that it's available everywhere and it's $2500. I got a better deal than I thought!

I started off with a $600 budget and ended up buying a dress for $1100. I wouldn't recommend doubling your budget

1421 with tax. I got 10% off at a trunk show. I wanted to spend $1300 with tax but I love the dress and going over a little was worth it

ETA - I live in the northeast which I think is important too because that impacts the cost of dresses

I had a budget of 2500 and spent 1375 before alterations. No tax since I am an Oregon resident! Yay! I didn't look at anything close to or over my budget. I didn't want to fall in love with something that I couldn't afford.

Mine was around $1800, including custom sizing and a hollow-to-hem length customization. The cost of the customizations was $267. Alterations should be minimal thanks to get customizations.
