How much does a wedding cake cost?

Emily, on June 25, 2021 at 1:13 PM Posted in Planning 1 18

I'm back with another cost question! We're starting to look at cakes online to get ideas & inspiration - and we want to make sure we budget enough for something that's both beautiful and delicious!!

How much does a wedding cake cost? Is there an average wedding cake cost, or a wedding cake cost calculator you can use?? Smiley cake

I'd love to know what your wedding cake cost and what went into the price! Is it based on the number of tiers, number of guests, the type of design?? We're cake clueless! Thanks in advance!! 🍰

This depends on so many factors. Location, size of the cake, flavors/fillings, and design. For us, we spent $800 on a square 3 tier cake that had 130 servings, two flavors- chocolate with Oreo filling and marble with strawberry shortcake filling, and limited design on the outside.

There is so many factors that goes in a cake, usually here is the break down

cost per serving is anywhere from 5-8 a slice

It depends on location I can find a cheaper cake in Kentucky then New york

Depends on the design if you want sugar flowers it's gonna cost you a pretty penny

Fondant is almost always more than butter cream

depends on the flavors some bakers charge extra for fruit especially if its not in season

and it depends on the brand I have a local baker who appeared on food network cake challenge and she quoted me 4,000 for my cake

It depends on your area, and even then there's a big difference. My cake for my first wedding was $860, I can't remember how many servings, but we had 300 guests.

The bakers I've looked at in and around Austin, TX have been from $2.50 to $5.00 a slice for buttercream, up to $7.00 a slice for fondant.

Agree with the above posters. I managed a bakery that made wedding cakes. Prices starts per person. Then will go up based on design. Type of decoration. Fondant, sugar flowers, does the baker need to make the topper, etc... And how far will they need to go to deliver the cake. Don't forget to factor that in! I'd say factor anywhere from $3-8 per person, depending on your market.

Depends on where you are and what you want. Call around to bakeries and get quotes.

You’re on the right track already! That main factor in cake pricing will be the number of guests you are serving!! Many places will quote you by the slice! 🍰 Intricate designs including flowers, fruit, sugar designs, and cool cake shapes will also add to the cost, and so will additional cake tiers.

The national average wedding cake cost is $500, with most couples spending between $300-$700 on their wedding cake. Or if you are getting quotes by the slice - buttercream cakes start at $4.00 per slice, and fondant cakes usually start at about $5.00 per slice.

You can use that estimated pricing by the slice as a basic wedding cake cost calculator - multiply your total number of guests by $4-$5 to see where your price range will start! 💲

You can check out more pricing details and cost-saving cake tips in WeddingWire’s cost guide: Wedding Cake Cost Guide.

Don’t forget that cake stands and toppers are an additional cost, and you’ll also have taxes and delivery fees!

Also here’s a great forum discussion I found where a lot of couples shared how much they spent on their wedding cake: Wedding Cake - what would a good price be?

You could just do a small cutting cake for the two of you, and then have other dessert options for your guests. Or you can have sheet cake to serve your guests, which would be cheaper than a big 3-4 tier cake.

Our wedding was pretty small and our small wedding cake cost $250. It was a small two tier wedding cake - this was our inspiration picture:

We got quotes anywhere from $700 to $2000 for a 3 layer cake to feed 150 guests. I found the biggest factor was the type of frosting used: buttercream was cheaper and fondant was significantly more expensive. At least for all of the bakers we considered, pricing was based on how many guests would be eating the cake, as opposed to the size of the cake or the number of tiers. I'd start setting up some tastings and getting quotes to give you a better sense of the pricing in your area

And then many venues charge a cake cutting fee ($1.50-$2.00 pp) on top of it as well!

Our cake was $243 for 112 servings! We got a two tier stacked cake and 2 three-quarter sheet cakes. Check out Publix if you're in the Southeast.

It depends on the type of cake that you want, tier and how many guests are coming (final count before they make it and they will give you cost of the cake). I ended up spending around $400

The cost is also determined by frosting and the kind of cake that you are get. For example my cake was a pound cake because it was the best out of my cake tasting and I liked it the most

There is no one cost fits all. This is an international forum so no two people even in the same city will pay the same price. Major metro areas cost more than rural towns but discounts can still be found. Flavors and fillings are a huge factor in price as well as how many people it needs to feed.
