How much food should i have at cocktail hour?

Sunisa, on December 29, 2023 at 5:27 AM Posted in Planning 0 1

I'm planning to do a Vietnamese style dinner, which is 8-10 courses and a boba bar later in the night. I'm not really sure how much food I should do for cocktail hour if dinner is heavy..

Every reception is different so there is no one size fits all answer.. In some areas, the cocktail hour is the main event with multiple food stations to make a full meal. This is how heavy appetizer receptions work as well so when done correctly, no one goes home hungry, but you pay extra well, which people say is not true. Then the “main” played course is not touched because they are full, and these are not inexpensive plates either. For visual comparison, think of a regular portioned plate as determined by the health/nutrition agencies: your protein is no bigger than a deck of cards, same for all your sides, and if you are not used to eating that small of a portion size regularly, you will be hungry. That is why people say they are still hungry, because they’re expecting 2-3x that amount of food which is a piled plate. A plated meal that everyone prefers is usually a maximum of 4-6 pieces/per person. The amount that caterers recommend including cocktail hour or as a heavy appetizers only reception is 20-25 pieces per person. That does not mean 20 crackers and cheese or tea sandwiches that is the automatic assumption, but instead a combination of 20 satays or egg rolls or chicken waffle cones and have substance.

The “norm” for the majority is the main meal is heavier and actually eaten so not as much is needed for couples who have the cocktail hour. Some circles don’t serve cocktail hour because it’s foreign to them. In that case, the cocktail hour is recommended to serve a mix of 2-4 heavy and light options max so that the main meal is not wasted because people are too full already.
Then in addition, people feel obligated to serve more food afterwards and not all venues allow enough time for the pacing to work. If dinner is served at 6, then have your pizza delivery served at midnight or 1, but that won’t work if the venue shuts down at 10:30 and not everyone is still hungry that late. With 8-10 courses and cocktail hour, you can skip the late night snack. But boba works great with after dinner cake.
