How much for Engagement pictures?

Mrs. Spring, on October 8, 2020 at 1:49 AM Posted in Parties and Events 0 44
The other day, my FH's mom asked us how much we spent on our engagement photos. The price was $235 and this included a 2 hour session, 185 proofs, 2 to 3 putfit changes and one indoor and outdoor setting. She exclaimed that $235 was way too much.

How much did you all spend for engagement photis and what was included?

Ours was included in our package, but would normally cost $500. We didn’t do outfit changes (though were given the option), it had about 75 digital proofs and was about 2 hours. One location only. We are located in a HCOL area (Southern California), and our photographer is on the higher-end and has been published.

We paid $145 ($115 for session + $27 parking fee for photog, due to where we chose as our location). Our session was 1.5 hours & included 4 locations (all within the same larger location though, so walking distance- we didn’t need to drive to each location). We had the option of outfit change, but didn’t do it. We got 200+ edited digital photos with full rights.

That sounds great to me—I’m looking at a $1,000 session, which is why I haven’t decided on adding it yet. Photographer I’m considering does not include it in the package. It would be about 2 hours & would come with an album of some of the photos for a guestbook. I believe an outfit change is offered, and you
choose an area & then walk around so no limit on backgrounds. I haven’t seen the contract so no set number of photos that I know of, but the galleries we were sent all have 100-110.

She’s a bit more expensive than some others we’ve looked at, but I haven’t seen below $500 for an engagement session, & I’ve seen up to $1,500 (New England area)!

Our engagement shoot was included in our package. However, this pricing sounds great. Like my mother-in-law, it sounds like your future mother-in-law is out of touch with how much things for weddings cost. My mother-in-law freaked out at the cost of how much hair and makeup was which sent me into a panic. My sister-in-law assured me that the costs were in line with what hair and makeup is for weddings.

Our engagement session was included in our wedding package, but our photographer’s website lists engagement shoots as starting at $350 for a 1.5 hour session- if you want outfit changes/multiple locations, she charges more.

Oh my! I would not pay that bc I'm too frugal. I would have to resort to a college student or armature photographer.

Yeah she is a bit older and is out of touch. The other day she told me she spent $100 and something on her wedding pics back in 1971! I Googled How much that woukd be today and it said $600 and something dollars so I was surprised she thought $235 was a lot.

We thought it was a great deal too! To be honest, I didn’t even shop around to compare prices, so I didn’t know what a great deal we were getting! I just knew as soon as I saw her photos, that’s who I wanted to shoot our engagement pictures! We live in the Chicago area.

Weddings definitely aren't as cheap as they used to be. I just wouldn't even talk to her about money in the future.

I don’t blame you—it’s making me hesitate for sure! We don’t absolutely need engagement photos at all, and our main motivation would be to do it with the photographer to get to know her style, so tbd haha.
