How much for long distance cake delivery?

I want toHow much for long distance cake delivery? 1

ask a friend, a professional baker, to do my cake. We're not very close and don't talk much, but friendly, and their cakes are really delicious. I am also inviting them to the wedding, but the distance for them is like 5 hours away + tolls (Mid NJ to Friendsville, MD). They would be handling/bringing the cake and keeping it (overnight) until my wedding, 6PM the next day and doing the set up. My caterer will cut and serve.
How much would/should I expect to pay for that? Delivery? Total? What's reasonable? The cake is simple enough (see photo) and the flowers and topper will be at the venue. I did some research on the average cost of a cake, but I'm stuck on the delivery. A lot of delivery costs are like $60-75 for local deliveries (within 15-20 miles) but I can't guess how much to budget for this. Please help!

It’s not reasonable in any way to ask a friend to make your cake, transport it 5+ hours and find a place to store it overnight. You could pay this friend thousands and this still wouldn’t be a reasonable request. There’s a reason most bakeries don’t deliver past a certain radius.

Unless this friend has a refrigerated truck to transport and store your cake overnight, I would highly advise against doing this. Between not having a proper vehicle to transport, not having proper cooling for the frosting, and no place to store overnight, there are just way too many opportunities for disaster. Since she is in the industry, I would ask her if she could suggest any great bakeries near your venue. If she does have a refrigerated truck however, I would simply ask her what her transporting fees are. I would be prepared to spend several hundred dollars at least in transportation fees (on top of the cost of the cake).

I understand some people use friends as vendors to get a discount. But for delivery that far away, the fee will be so high that it would be cheaper to just get a local bakery to do it. (That's if it's even possible -- other posters are saying your cake will be ruined if you try.)

Have you talked to your friend about this? Even if they have a refrigerated truck and are willing, it sounds like a lot of stress on them.

Oh man... that sounds kind of crazy for pricing, actually. like you'd have to think of the cost of gas itself and the effort and time she's spending delivering it, etc.

my wedding was only 3.5 miles away from my bakery but it was still like $25 delivery fee. so i can't imagine transportation from a place that is 5 hours away.

i agree with PP i think it would be cheaper just going to a grocery store locally

I think 5 hour transport for a wedding cake is too much. Anything could happen in that time! Maybe reconsider with a closer bakery? Best of luck!

It does not make sense to do this. You are better off with finding a great local baker
