how much is too much for flowers?

Anonymous, on March 13, 2012 at 11:53 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 27

Hello girls,

I am getting married on August in NYC and I am going crazy with the floral arrangements. I need 4 bouquets (1 for me plus 3 bridesmaids), 5 boutonniers, 3 coursages, 12-13 centerpieces, another centerpiece for the card table and one for our sweetheart table. I know that the price depends on the type of flowers but I really have no idea how much is too much. I want tall centerpieces, and I would love to have calla lilies and/or orchids mixed with other flowers to bring the price down. I am within a budget but... based on your experiences, how much money do you think I should budget for my flowers?

Thanks,

JA.

In my opinion, $600 is too much for me to spend on flowers only because I would not keep them, its only for a day. But flowers do make a big difference and make everything look pretty. Im spending about $450 for my wedding party and the venue has tall silk flowers for the reception so I got lucky. Being that you are from NY I can imagine things are expensive there tho. So I guess the state matters too.

Ugh, I am paying $2100, and that is TOO MUCH, but I want stargazer lilies, and that is the price for them.

And 2 arrangements for the ceremony (to be reused on the entry table)

What ever puts you over your budget is too much.

Figure out the amount of money you can save up to pay for the wedding.

Put that amount into the "budget" tool up under "my wedding"

See how much they suggest you put aside for flowers.

Ask yourself how important flower centerpieces are. Ask if there is anything the budget tool has assigned money to that you don't feel is important (or something that you are not spending money on) Move the money around to add more to the flower budget if that is important to you.

I didn't feel flower centerpieces were important. My flower budget was under $700. I used the hall's free centerpieces and used the money I would have spent on flowers for our honeymoon.

Thanks ladies. So far I have found two florist who have gave me descent prices in comparison to the rest; one $1500 and other one $1800. all the others have been above 2000. But I like more the centerpieces from the 1800 girl but that proposal does not include the arrangement for the card table. Also, I will be providing the vases.

at this point I do not know if to keep shopping around or book with one of those 2. Smiley sad

Planing a wedding is more work than what I expected (and expensive Smiley laugh).

I agree with Abiti. Take you time. Don't rush into anything just yet. However, since you are getting married in August, when you interview florists, I would get a feel of their availability.

I paid 300 for 22 centerpieces (I included the vases which I got at the 99 cents store), bride bouquet, 3 BM bouquets, groom boutonniere, 3 GM boutonnieres, 2 mother corsages, 2 father boutonnieres, 4 woman sponsor corsages, 4 men sponsor boutonnieres. But I didn't go with expensive flowers, I went with white and red carnations, red and white roses, and baby's breath.

I'm in NJ and we paid just under $1600 for my bouquet, 3 BM bouquets, 2 FG, 1 coursage for my mom, 4 boutonniers for the guys, a big tropical set up of plants & shrubs for the ceremony, & 6 centerpieces that also doubled as part of our ceremony set up (we were married in the same room as the reception but they switched it over while we had cocktails elsewhere). I had mostly orchids with a few lilies & roses mixed in.

Prices tend to be higher in the big cities like NYC because the overhead for the vendors is so high. My best advice is to shop around! Get quotes from at least three different florists....then take the one in the middle.

Adam is right on - our wedding is downtown in a big city and we found much better deals with vendors that are located just over city/county lines. Their sales tax is lower too. Smiley smile

Are you getting married in a church, do you belong to one or does your family belong to one in the area? I ask b/c we are using the florist that supplies our church's flowers. Churches rarely overpay for anything they get on a regular basis. Our florist's prices are pretty incredible. I just called the church office and asked the secretary who their florist is. Church ladies know everything!

To answer your main question though, I agree with Hayley - it's totally a matter of budget and priority. Flowers are at the bottom of our priority list. If they were at the top of our priority list, "too much" would be a very different number.

Flowers are supposed to be 10-15% of your total budget... (or so those websites say) but its really about what you want...

Flowers were a HUGE priority for me (more important than the dress actually)!!! I am spending about 15% of my budget-- and thats 6 bouquets and 25 centerpieces (I provided the containers)...

Go into your florist meeting with a exact budget and be VERY upfront with it.

Even mixed with other flowers....callas and orchids are premium flowers and are costly for the florist to buy, and in turn, costly for you.

If the callas and orchids are really important to you, maybe have them in your bouquet and in his corsage.

Tall centerpieces are generally costly because of the price of the glass vase (usually a rental, but can cost the florist $60-100 each), and then you have to put something sizable in/on it so that the proportion is right...and set up can take a long time, so that's costly too. Tall centerpieces with orchids and callas (in proportion and not looking cheap)....well over $100 each, for sure.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but unfortunately, the magazines and blogs show you all these great bouquets and arrangements and then don't tell you what the going price is for it!

Adam is a great florist; I agree with him, get three quotes, find the florist whose style you love, and don't necessarily go with the lowest bid.

    Hello Everyone....

Thanks so much for your comments. I took your advises and kept shopping around and i have found good deals. My main problem is that the wedding is in NYC but I do not live there, I live ~4.5h away from NYC. I will be going there this week to meet with 3 florists and see samples before making a final decision.

Kris, No, I am not getting married at a church; but I the ceremony and the reception will be at the same location so helps me a little to bring the prices down, since I wont need to decorate two different locations.

Adan, too bad I am not getting married in Boston so you could help me Smiley laugh.

I have attached pictures of two of my favorite types of centerpieces. I hope you like them.

Thanks so much everyone... I will keep you updated with respect to florists and pics of centerpieces.

Hi Judith. I live and plan events in NYC. Let me know if you want any referrals. Also, just curious where are you getting married? Its so hard to decide how much to spend until you know what flowers you want. Plus the price in NYC is sooo much more than other places. The flowers above are gorgeous!

The flowers are gorgeous, but the first picture is going to be very expensive. The second looks like it's going to block people's view. Keep in mind that centerpieces should be below or above eye level.

On a different note, could you please change your avatar to something other than default shakers?
