How much weight can you realistically lose in 30 days?

Erin, on August 3, 2017 at 5:58 PM

Posted in Fitness and Health 56

I know that the process cannot be rushed and that losing weight is a lifestyle change. I am just wondering how much weight is possible to lose in 30 days? I want to lose weight in a healthy way. Also, what is your best weight loss tip? Thank you to anyone who responds.

Realistic is ~10 lbs/month if you have a lot of weight to lose, 3-4 If you don't have much. Part of it will depend on your individual body - I pack on muscle, so when I work out a lot I may not lose any weight even if I drop a size or two.

Since your wedding is over a year away idk why the 30 day thing matters though? If you are 100+ pounds overweight, you could theoretically lose it all by then. I have a friend who has lost over 60 lbs this year by planning out all of her meals and exercising 5-6 times per week.

It depends a lot on how much extra weight you have to lose. A healthy pace is .5-2lbs per week, but that really depends on where you are starting. If you are struggling with obesity, more weight actually might be realistic.

Listen to those who say about 1 to 1.5 pounds per week. Do NOT listen to anyone who tells you to eat less than 1200 calories per day, or go on some weird diet.

Diets do not work. Sure you lose weight, find the plan to be a pain and go back to your old habits.

It truly is calories in vs calories out. I recommend My Fitness Pal. Just do the free service. It asks you what you weigh, what you want to weigh and determines how many calories you should take in per day.

I was very thin and gained a crap ton of weight over 10 years. I went on My Fitness Pal and in less than two years lost 104 pounds. I am now back to my skinny self. I did NOT give up any food group, nor beverage (aka wine and cocktails). I simply make sure that everything I eat is logged.

In 30 days, you could probably lose 4-5 lbs. 1 lb a week is recommended. If you are super overweight you could get away with 2 lbs a week. If you are already at a healthy weight it's gonna be more like .5-1 lb. my advice is to count calories. It is the most straightforward way to lose weight. Check out myfitnesspal. You input all your stats (height weight etc) and it will tell you how many calories to eat a day. And you have to log your food accurately and honestly.

Started low carb at about 13 down been doing it for a month. It's a lifestyle change just cutting out breads, rice, pasta and sugar. Lots of meat and veggies and unsweetened tea. Did two weeks strict and now can add a tiny bit back in but I don't crave it anymore

Carbs in general aren't necessarily bad, it's the simple carbs you want to stay away from (refined sugar, most cereals, etc). Complex carbs (most vegetables) are good for you and keep you full longer. I can eat a whole cup of broccoli for very low cals and carbs, and that paired with about 4oz of meat and either another vegetable or a grain (I LOVE jasmine rice) will keep me full for a long time. I feel like I eat all the time, but I'm only eating roughly 1700 calories a day.

I recommend doing research and finding calculators/nutrition plans based on your goals. My goal isn't to really lose weight- I'm not paying much attention to the scale, I just want to decrease my body fat percentage by 3% and build a little muscle. I also strength train and go to the gym 5-6 days a week. So my daily macro goals will look different from someone whose main goal is fat/weight loss, or for someone who is solely trying to build muscle/gain weight. Basically, what works for someone else may not be what works for you.

1-2lb weight loss/week is a good goal. I agree with low carb diet (no more than 25% diet). We all love our carbs and believe that carbs will fill us more, satiate our hunger more but protein (fish, nuts, chicken is better than beef/pork) keeps us full.

If you do any kind of starvation diet, your body will retain everything as fat. And when you eat a decent amount of calories again, you will gain it all back quickly. So please eat healthily.

Good luck to you. Weight loss is difficult for most of us.

Well for me probably 5lbs because I don't fluctuate too much and I despise dieting. Trust me, I try and still fat.

If you have over 20% body fat you should be able to loose atleast 2 pounds a week with exercise and proper diet. The higher percentage of body fat you have the more you can loose in a week and vice versa

Its all in your diet and cardio! You need at least 30 minutes of high intensity cardio everyday, 10lb multiple reps with weights, yogi detox tea daily, and drink at least half your body weight in ounces or a gallon of water a day. Change your diet by eating lean proteins and cutting your portions in half!

If this a lifestyle change, that's one thing. If it's a wedding day thing, I have a different opinion on the matter.

If you wanted to lose weight in a healthy way, you should have seriously invested in a healthy diet and fitness program months ago. As it is, If you're very careful about your intake of fat and carbs (and watch your fiber intake - very important), you could lose 10 pounds by your wedding day -- maybe 12. Healthy has been repeated several times on this post - 1 -2 pounds a week (but even the most disciplined can expect weeks of zero lost pounds).

Start watching your fat and caloric intake now, but don't do anything ridiculous. How many calories and fat grams you need to lose weight is all over the internet. And I have to ask, why would you try to lose 10 or more pounds this close to your wedding day? It's just going to require last minute alterations that will cost you and stress you, and really, is this small handful of potentially lost pounds worth the minimal result?

@Christy, if low carb works in your world, that is great.

But (and you had to know that I was going to say but) it is a lifestyle that is not sustainable.

I did the low carb "diet" years ago. Sure, it worked for a while, but then reversed itself.

Seriously, I lost 104 pounds by eating REAL food, not eliminating anything, and being accountable for what I put in my mouth.

Eliminating any food group is silly. Even *gasp* sugars.

Here is what I ate today...just to give you an indication as to what an under 1400 calorie, I wear a size 6, diet looks like:

    Breakfast

    Chobani Cherry Greek Yogurt

    AM Snack

    8 unsalted roasted almonds

    Lunch

Tuna wrap (I make this with low sodium tuna, 1 Tbsp mayo, 1 tsp sweet relish and 1/2 sheet of lavash)

    Banana

    Min Twix Bar

    PM Snack

    Hummus

    Snap Peas

    2 ounces of Gin

    Dinner

    3 Scallops

    1 ounce angelhair pasta

    zucchini

    lettuce

    frisee

    radicchio

    broccolini

    1/4 ounce bleu cheese

8 ounces Ribolla (Italian white wine)

I am still at only 1202 calories...without considering any movement I made today.

Christy, I appreciate your respectful post. It might sound like I'm making assumptions, but that wasn't my intention. Actually, I'm glad you challenged me, because I just realized that the OP doesn't have six or seven weeks, but more than a year to take control. That makes a massive difference. Every time I see a September date, I see my son's wedding (next month) -- so, my bad. I understand why you thought I was making assumptions, lol.

Removing all assumptions, the safest way to lose weight would be 1- 2 pounds per week, and if the OP is diligent with a healthy diet and exercise, she could lose more than 50 pounds by her wedding date.

I knew there was a reason my mother always told me not to get involved with weight discussions, lol.

Christy, carbs are a part of my world. Lavash in my tuna wrap. Pasta in my dinner. I also eat potatoes and bread.

I showed you what I ate today.

Bottom line, I eat real food and lost more weight than I gained. I have now maintained for two years.

"Low Carb-ers" cannot add back carbs a small amount and think that all will be right. It seriously comes down to eating healthy food within ones caloric level.

You need to first figure out your total daily energy expenditure. There are calculators that will give you a good estimate. That's the calories you burn in a day by living and whatever workouts you do. You need to eat less than that. 1lb of fat is 3500 calories. So if you want to lose 2lbs a week then you need to eat at a 1000 cal deficit every day. That gives you an idea of just how tough it is to do so. And also this is referring to fat, not body weight which can be water weight.

Low carb and cardio. At one point I weighed around 220 and went down to about 180 in about 3-4 months. And as someone who has Celiac Disease, I wouldn't recommend going gluten free for weightloss. There's a ton of bad crap without gluten.
