How old is something old?

Jacqui76, on April 19, 2016 at 11:08 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18

Well, the title basically sums up my question. :-) How old does something have to be in order to be considered something old?

I was originally thinking about wearing the tiara that my stepmom wore to her prom over 50 years ago, and that would have been my something old and something borrowed. But sadly, she recently misplaced it. I can easily find something else for my something borrowed- even borrow a bobby pin if I have to, but I'm not sure what will be my something old now.

What is/was your something old, and how old is it?

I wore my mom's Tiffany bracelet as a combo something old and something borrowed. Its not that old. But since she has had it since before I met my husband, I considered it old enough haha

I think if you consider it old, it's old. There's no set rule that I know of.

I don't really have a date that I consider to be old. Heck, even something from my childhood would be old. I think I'm going to wear one of my grandma's diamond bracelets.

I think it's as old as you care for it to me. I wore my grandmother's gold bangle, she died in 2007, but honestly I have no idea how long she had it.

I think for the purposes of the tradition, anything that wouldn't be considered "new" is thought of as "old," if that makes sense.

So I have a bracelet that I got for mother's day a few years ago, maybe that would be old enough to be something old. I wasn't planning to wear a bracelet but that might work.

Or maybe my mom still has something from my grandmom's jewelry box.

I thought (and I could be waaay off base here) that the purpose of the "old" was for something from your life before FH (for instance I might wear my sorority lavalier).

I think "old" is perceived differently by everyone. Personally I think old is something that belonged to someone when I was younger, under the age of 12. But some people might think old is an item they got 5 years ago. My something old was my moms engagement ring she got in 1973.

I didn't bother with any of it. Neither did my sister, or the brides in other weddings, in which I've been involved. Neither did my parents, and they've been married almost 40 years. Don't sweat it ...

My aunt's wedding dress she is letting me borrow is my something old since she wore it about 12 years ago. I am also 19 so something old to me is anything from the 90s or early 2000s.

My 'old' and 'blue' and 'borrowed' was a hankie one g'ma gave the other. My 'new' were my shoes (my dress was vintage).

Well, I know my marriage won't be doomed if I can't figure it out, but I think it's fun so I want to bother. Plus, Tina already sent me a penny for my (blue) shoe.

My something old is going to be the lace edging from my mom's veil wrapped around my bouquet.

My old is my grandmother's engagement ring. I think it's from the 30s? I don't know what I would consider old enough to be my something old, maybe something from my childhood or before?
