How soon is too soon to send invitations?

Amari, on November 25, 2019 at 12:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

So both our families are mainly from the mid-west but we are having the wedding in Puerto Rico. With that being said, our wedding is two years from now that way we can save what we need to since we are paying for it ourselves. I wasn't sure when I should create and send invites.

Flights and hotels are not cheap in PR and I want to give everyone enough time to save their own money as well as have the dates available for them to block off of their work schedules.

At the same time, I didn't want to send them too soon in advance where they would forget to RSVP. I wasn't planning on sending a save the date but given this case , I will if I have to since I'm DIY'ing our stationary.

What do you suggest?

I’d send your save the dates a year before the wedding. I don’t even think airlines won’t even let you book a flight more than a year in advance anyway? And people won’t be able to request time off work more than a year in advance too. 1 year should be the max for save the dates.

Then for invitations maybe 3 months before the wedding.

I would send save the dates 1 year out. When you send them out, I'd have your wedding website 100% done with information on airports, hotels, hotel blocks, etc. so people can start planning. Then invites I'd send 3-4 months out.

If you don’t want to send save the dates , at least tell family “this is when it will be” so they can start looking. I would recommend save the dates though ! I’ve heard some people do electronic ones via email - we did basic ones in the main. I mean BASIC, no photo .

I would let VIPs (family, closest friends) know the date by word of mouth now, then send the physical save the date 1 year out!

We also chose to do a destination wedding. We're getting married in Jamaica next October. We sent out email invites 2.5 years in advance to give everyone more than enough time to plan. I created STD'S and handed them out at the 2 year mark. I've since created a Facebook group for those that were invited to share tidbits of information because we're less than a year out. We're choosing not to spend money on official invites.
