How strong are the prongs on a ring?

FutureMrsAF, on March 19, 2017 at 11:51 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 15

Oddly enough I haven't been able to find much on the topic on google. I was curious how strong prongs actually are and how good they really are about keeping a ring in place. Proooobably acting like this because I just got my "upgrade" and I am scared shi*less that the stone with fall out or I'll bump it wrong and it'll pop out. Anyone know the facts on prongs? It's a 4 prong oval, if that helps!

I always am worried that I hit my hand too hard or something.

When I come home. My ring goes immediately into its box. Safe and away from me doing everyday duties like dishes. Cleaning. Laundry.

We have the warranty and when we go and get the ring cleaned they check the stones.

I just make it a habit to take it off and be careful.

@hannah w people can be real nasty so I'm going to give it to you straight.... you keep typing "warrantee" it is "WARRANTY". Maybe you're confusing it work guarantee? Just a heads up!!! But yes having a warranty is a great idea. Insurance is even better. Maybe look into that too.

I have a 4 prong emerald cut and I bump it all the time. Never take it off. Do you have insurance on the ring?

@hannah w no worries. Sometimes (if you're using an iPhone) it will correct to a word you've used before. As in, I type FFFIIYYYAAAH (to my sister about fire) and it autocorrects on me all the time with other stuff. I'll hit send without even noticing. Just didn't want you to catch heat.

@Erin, no not yet, I've been looking into it but unfortunately my FH misplaced the receipt during moving (we had it made online) and all of the jeweler insurance I've found requests the receipt to be able to insure it, even though I've offered to get it appraised to prove its value... so right now, I'm just kinda risking it :/

Where he purchased the ring should be able to make a receipt for it.

Is there possibly a copy of the receipt in his email since he did it online? We had to have the receipt AND appraisal for mine to be insured. But get it done ASAP, or keep it somewhere safe until it is even though it will be awful not to wear it.

All good ideas, I'll have FH contact the company and see if we can have one sent to us. They didn't send an online receipt, only provided shipping etc. thank you! I've been concerned about it because it would suck to lose a stone, its morganite so it would not cost a ton to replace but still, I'd prefer to not have to worry about it Smiley smile

@Future- the jeweler should have sent you a certificate with value. I had my ring added onto our renters insurance and they didn't ask for the receipt. Just the value.

My ring belonged to my MIL and had white golf prongs which I was told were very common. The do wear out over time and I got new ones shortly after I got my ring. I got platinum prongs because my jeweler said they would last forever.

I worry about this all the time. I love emerald cut, so that's what I got (the stone is a sapphire), but in retrospect, I feel like it was a mistake because it's so prominent. I have already chipped it, which I feel horrible about. After the wedding, I'm only going to wear my engagement ring on special occasions.

Prongs should be checked every six months.
