How to Avoid Cutting Fee

Sarah, on August 30, 2018 at 1:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

Hi! Does anyone know how to avoid the caterers' cake cutting fee? For example, can we just have a selection of cupcakes on the dessert buffet? I'd much rather be able to invite more people to my wedding by avoiding unnecessary costs on other things. Thanks!

Some caterers through it in for free, so you could look around for one that does? If not, mini desserts like cupcakes are a way better idea!

We are doing cupcakes instead of cake, it was easier for us and cheaper.

After the cake cutting with just the 2 of us, the cake was placed at the sweet table so guests cut themselves a slice if they wanted it.

My venue gave us the option of doing it ourselves to avoid their fee.

Our caterer includes it, which is nice. But yes, if that was an big cost, I think cupcakes are lovely!

I would ask the venue since each one will have different rules on this.

Places that charge a cutting fee will usually charge a plating or service fee if what you serve does not nerd to be cut. Best is all inclusive, no extra fees. But particularly when desserts are prepared by an outside bakery, the caterer wants extra money for putting it on a plate and serving it and washing the plate. You may find that getting a 3 layer cake 12" as a cutting cake, and having the venue do a sheet cake ir other dessert for a choice, may end up cheaper by far than a large tiered one plus cutting or plating fee. Does not have to be cupcakes, unless those are what you want most.

Most Caterers included in their price. You can ask your Venue if they have someone that will cut it for free. At my sister's wedding she had a cake and one of the guests that attended her wedding Cut the Cake for her.

If we went through a preferred vendor then we didn't have a cake cutting fee or cupcake setup fee if we went through somebody else we had a 55 cent cake cutting fee per person or $40 total cupcake setup fee. By the time I did the math the preferred vendor was cheaper and better cake than any alternatives so I just did that.
