How to avoid travel related stomach issues..

Keisha, on January 4, 2024 at 10:58 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

We are getting married in Dominican Republic at the beginning of May and while I am so excited, I am getting scared. I am reading reviews (which should be taken with a grain of salt, those with bad experiences tend to scream their opinion louder than those who enjoyed their time) but it seems to be a common theme that those travelling in big groups tend to have almost half get sick. My worst fear since we booked our destination wedding has been someone getting food poisoning the day before (god forbid its one of us!)

Any destination brides have any tips or tricks that we can share with our group? I have a few food allergies so I tend to pack my own breakfast bars, protein bars, snacks and chips so I may just avoid large portions of food until day of, whereas my fiancé will pretty much eat anything you hand him - LOL.

Any advice is much appreciated / any feedback of weddings you have gone to abroad!

More often than not, people get sick from the water. Make sure you and your guests do not drink the tap water and only drink bottled water. Also, be careful not swallow water while in the shower (I know people don’t tend to, but sometimes it happens). Resorts tend to wash their produce with filtered water, but if you go to a more local restaurant, then they likely will not.

Digestive issues may happen just with vacation eating, but food poisoning would be rare at a resort. However, you could take more precautions like not having ice in your beverages and bringing antidiarrheal medicines. However, try not to be too anxious (which will cause upset stomachs) as any luxury resort/ hotel will have potable water for brushing your teeth, and bartenders/ food servers should have the highest food and beverage safety skills like using tongs for garnishes like limes. Still you can always opt for bottled beverages and bottled wine. Keep portable hand sanitizer with you to back up handwashing. Good luck.

Not sure about how this works for traveling, but saltine crackers are good for an upset stomach! Whenever I was sick as a kid, my mom used to always give me some. I could be wrong, but I think they absorb your stomach acid (which would explain their effectiveness)

Yes, definitely bringing ginger gravol, Imodium and have recently heard there is a stronger form of Imodium that doctors can prescribe if going to tropical destinations for upset stomach caused by travel, weather etc. Good point on brushing teeth with bottled water, we will tell our guests to request water bottles daily (with tip) so the cleaners and staff can accommodate for this.

Sadly I cant have gluten but I used to live off of saltine crackers at resorts for this exact reason! But this reminded me to look into some allergen friendly versions as they really do help set a base in my stomach before drinking or eating - no that I rely on this, but it definitely used to help when I couldn't stomach big portions of food.

We honeymooned at a resort in the DR and were warned against drinking non-bottled water as well as not drinking too many drinks with coconut milk. Both could cause stomach issues.

I am also gluten-free (among other things), and we requested a card that had my food intolerances listed in Spanish (ex: no gluten). This made it easier if our server didn’t speak much English, since our Spanish is limited. When they saw the card, they knew to let the chef know. I didn’t have any cross-contamination during my stay.
    Enjoy your wedding!

That is such an amazing idea! I am gluten free, dairy free and egg free so I know options are typically limited. This would help so much written in Spanish just in case. Thank you for sharing such a good tip!

I haven’t heard of limited coconut milk but Pina Coladas are always my favourite so I will be sure to take it easy on them.

Good points all around, but make sure to avoid fresh greens, like those you typically get in a salad!
