How to combat stress eating after successful weight loss

on March 19, 2021 at 4:08 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 1 9
Anyone else finding themselves stress eating as the days get closer? I am 77 days out and I cannot stop eating my feelings. I am so disappointed in myself because I’ve worked so hard last summer to lose the first 15 pounds before dress shopping and I have another 15 to go and instead my nerves are getting the best of me and leading me right to the kitchen. I have zero motivation to get up and exercise and I don’t understand why I can find that girl I was last summer who worked out an hour everyday in a heat wave. I’ve been maintaining until now. I was so sure that I would find my momentum by this time because I’m getting closer but the opposite is happening because the closer we get the more anxious I feel and the more I see how much still needs to be done. The struggle is so real! Last summer I channeled all of my worries and anxieties into working out and feeling my best and the endorphins were amazing. This time around I’m channeling them into food.

I am too! I lost 25lbs and now I feel like I’ve gained back 10lbs. At this point I honestly believe we need to just love ourselves and our bodies. You will look spectacular! You did amazing dropping 15lbs and no matter what just be comfortable in your own skin. One thing I noticed that has helped me to not stress eat is to throw away all the junk food I have and try not to buy it or small portions. Been trying to not eat past 9/10pm and eat between 12-6pm. It’s been rough but finding patterns like this helps. Also TEA!!! Helps amazing to detox while giving your body the nutrients it needs. Especially ginger, lemon, honey, and orange tea. Best wishes !

I’m right there with you! Stress eating is getting out of control. To top it off I’m not sleeping! I’ll go to bed at my normal time but 1am & I’m wide awake! Mind racing with things I can’t forget to do!

One of the best pieces of advice I got was when I don’t feel like working out, start a timer and tell yourself you’ll only workout for 5 minutes. If at the end of the 5 minutes you want to stop you can. But most of the time once you get going you’ll finish. Give yourself options.

Also, don’t be so hard on yourself. You will still look gorgeous.

I agree with all of this. I’ve also found that it’s hardest to get myself going the first time after a break from working out. Once I force myself to do it, and then get into a regular routine, it’s much easier.

On stress eating, I find chewing gum helps, and using things like meditation apps as an alternative stress treatment.

Agree with all posts- the stress is real. Michelle, you’re not alone - 6 weeks before our wedding woke up at 2am nightly with full blown panic attack. I had to do laundry (something mundane and non- wedding related) to calm myself down.
I channeled all my stress and frustrations into push ups and planks with loud music 😂 music for me is a powerful tool.
One of my bridesmaids actually put a note on her fridge to herself as motivation. Hope this helps and just know we are cheering you on from the sidelines!!! ❤️

I don't keep cheat foods in my home so there is nothing to stress eat. If I have a craving, I guess I can get to work chopping up broccoli to roast or boiling an egg? Lol. I love the food I eat and I eat til I'm full, but there's no sugar or refined flour snacks that make my body want to just keep eating

I am also having the exact same issue. I’m getting married in two weeks and the stress is killer. I’m retaining water even though I’m drinking loads. I’m barely sleeping and when I am sleeping I’m having crazy vivid dreams. To top it off I picked up my dress yesterday from alterations and I’m not happy with how it looks. I’m considering buying something else at this point!

My recommendation is to allow yourself small indulgences daily so that the temptation does not build over time and you binge. Allow yourself one piece of chocolate a day! Or 10 potato chips, whatever your treat of choice is tell yourself you’re allowed “x” amount per day. You likely won’t have it most days but it allows you to not feel totally restricted.

Have you tried not having unhealthy food around? I noticed that I stuff myself sometimes when I have food cravings, so I stopped buying snacks and forcing myself to have fruit and nuts instead. I also meal plan so there’s always real available whenever I feel hungry. It’s helped me make better choices so far. I would allow a cheat day or a cheat meal where you can eat whatever (in moderate proportion).

As for exercise that’s a hard one, but I set a calendars reminder (like a meeting with myself) and I try to stick with it. I would say I spend a lot of time exercising at low intensity. I know everyone recommends 30-45 min HIIT, but that doesn’t work for me. I would say try to find active hobbies that you enjoy, so it doesn’t feel like exercising.
