how to cover the walls with fabric maybe? need cheap crafty ideas

mrs.flowers, on February 10, 2010 at 11:22 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 36

The walls at our reception site are green, and it doesn't really go with our color scheme and decor, so i was wanting to cover the walls somehow with fabric or something but the thing is i'm not sure how to do that and do it on a budget simply and inexpensive. Please help! lol

Your colors? I'm not sure if this will work but, perhaps you could cast colored lighting on the walls and it would turn a different color because te walls are green? Does that make sense? It might be cheaper than buy/renting fabric..

Colors are dark purple and pale yellow, i don't think the vendor will allow us to do lighting stuff like that.

Hmm..what's their policy on hanging stuff? The hall we're renting, we can't put nails or anything in the walls/ceiling.. You can ask your vendor what their policy is on special effect lighting..I can't imagine why they wouldn't let you, it's less 'invasive' than hanging fabric..

Another good idea is to ask the vendor manager, perhaps they can recommend a way or a decorator that has done it before.

I would check with the vender...if they won't allow you to do lighting, they probably won't let you hang fabric on their walls either.

There is actually a way to do it with some kind of putty but I don't know if the vendor would allow that or if it would discolor the walls. I read about it a while back when I was having a party and our one wall was still drywall and not finished. I wanted to cover it! I remember reading about using foam and covering it with the fabric and then their is a special adhesive that you stick it on the wall with. Do some research with those key words and you should be able to find some inspiration.

I don't know about this but on the wedding shows when they put up white fabric on the walls they dont put them ON the walls. It looks like on curtain rod things with stands and just white fabric hanging down (and then they project lighting on it). You could do something like that?

This might be a little over budget... but i think that this stuff is fairly cheap and im sure that you could resale it later... or probably even return it to Lowes or wherever you decide to buy it from

@Carla I think is referring to "pipe and drape". If you connect with vendors on getting quotes, use that term and they will have a good idea of what you are looking for.

Good luck with finding a solution. That would be mine, but it can get expensive depending where you live.

If you haven't already, chk with your venue about drapery. My venue is a hotel and their gazebo, as beautiful as it is, overlooks rooms in the courtyard. I dont want ppl watching my wedding (or for me to see them, LOL) from their room windows, ew! So they explained that they would use the drapery as a "backdrop" in all white or ivory, OR if they had my colors, they'd use that (but they didnt). THey also have a large pool to the right of the gazebo which, during Sept. woudl be closed and the ugly black pool cover would show. Also unappealing. My hotel/venue said the entire gate around the pool would have the drapery also. SOmetimes if you ask nicely or work it into your package at your venue they can include these things for a fee. SOmetimes the fee is a few hundred bucks, but if you consider all the fabric used and the labor for them to put it up, its not so bad..better than doing it yourself!

You know Green might not look to bad with your colors anyways. My location has WOOD PANNELING. can you say old school... but I think that no one will really notice that with everything else going on

How high are the VFW walls? Some of the places I've decorated are very high, and covering them with fabric is not reasonable. If they are 8' to 10' high, it is do-able. I would look into rental. It will sound expensive, but believe me, if you've never done it before, covering the walls with fabric will be difficult, time consuming and pretty expensive. Pipe and drape is the best, and I'll bet the venue won't allow you to tape, nail or staple fabric into their walls. You will have to build some kind of frame with fabric over it to block off areas. Covering the whole room is probably not realistic. Good Luck!

Pipe and drape is the way to go. We rent 12' sections for as little as $30 each and it's quick and easy to install. Check with local rental places or decorators.

    .

A PP mentioned buying something from Lowe's and returning it when you're done...this is a horrible idea...it's basically stealing. Shame on you Sara M for even mentioning the idea.

I think i'm just going to go with nothing and leaving the walls because it might not look bad with everything in there and i don't think people will pay much attention to the colors on the wall but thank you all for your help!

Trust me, no one is going to look at those walls as much as you have; they are just going to be going to a great party and having a ball.
