How to do honeymoon fund?

Richaelyn, on April 24, 2021 at 3:59 AM Posted in Registry 0 12
Hello,
My fiancé and I will be having a Honeymoon Fund. The honeymoon Fund is our top choice however, we will still be having a mini gift registry for the guests that would like to give us a physical item and there’s still a few items we could use in our apartment or upgrade. Anyway for the honeymoon fund, I’m trying to see if I should use a website like Honeyfund...where we could list the things we’ll be doing or need for the honeymoon like spa massages, date night dinners, airline tickets...etc or should I just make a donation goal and have my guests contribute to the goal like maybe a cash fund or GofundMe (not a GofundMe but something of that nature) Maybe I don’t need to be as detailed and a donation goal/Cash fund would be easier?

If you ask for the activities and then don't do them, people will be upset, so take that how you will. I don't like honeyfunds, but if you want to do it, just do a cash fund with the goal being roughly how much you are spending on the honeymoon (which you should have already budgeted for if you're doing a fund)

We set up a "honeymoon" account on PayPal and linked that on our registry page! Sometimes people don't like to buy things, and just want to give cash, and I thought that would be the easiest way (so there isn't cash floating around at our wedding). Plus, sometimes websites will take a percentage out of what you get. Make sure wherever you sign up, you read all the fine print!

So you didn’t really have a donation goal or list the activities but, you just allowed people to give however much by going to the PayPal link?

Correct! We have a little blurb that says something like "Help us live our best lives on our Honeymoon", and then people can give whatever they want. We set a close date a week or 2 after our wedding, and after that we can just transfer it to one of our bank accounts! It was pretty easy to set up, and didn't force us to pick an activity, or for people to feel like they were giving cash for no reason (other than helping us get back to financial normal after spending a fortune on our wedding haha).

Ok. By using PayPal, was there any fees for the guests or for you to deposit?

Here's info about their Money Pool. I don't think it costs to give money (its kind of like Venmo). I'm not sure about moving it to your bank account since I haven't done it yet, but they don't have anything in there about that.

I'd use either the Knot, Zola, or Honeyfund. Using GoFundMe, Paypal, or Venmo all comes across as rude for some reason. People like to contribute to specific activities that you'll do on your honeymoon (as long as you actually intend to do them) rather than give a random amount into your personal account.

If you're using a site like The Knot or Zola, they have "cash funds" you can set up. Here's some options from The Knot:

How to do honeymoon fund? 1

How to do honeymoon fund? 2

How to do honeymoon fund? 3

I like that you can incorporate these on your website. When someone visits, they can check it out as part of your registry!

We’ll be using Zola for our “cash fund” part of our registry. there is a 2.4% credit card fee you can have the guests pay or you can decide to pay when you transfer to you bank account.
If you don’t plan on doing certain activities, don’t add them to your honeymoon fund. Guests will get upset that they think they gifted you a nice dinner if you didn’t get a nice dinner.
We’ll be using our cash fund for our house down payment so we have a set goal that is hidden from guests and they can contribute as much or as little as they want since we’ll be paying for our honeymoon ourselves.

To me, providing a donation “goal” feels a little interesting. I say that because a honeymoon isn’t mandatory and it isn’t an emergency financial need. A honeymoon is the couple’s choice to do after the wedding. So it should be something that the couple can afford. For me, it would feel very odd to invite people to take time out of their lives to attend our wedding... and then also ask them to pay for our vacation. However, if you are going to ask your family and friends to pay for you, maybe it’s just a few supplemental dollars that can go toward an upgraded dinner or a tour (but not airline tickets or hotel rooms). So, if at all, maybe a goal of $300-$500 won’t receive a side-eye 😆 . But the honeymoon itself should be covered by the couple. Otherwise, if you’re banking on others to fund your vacation and you don’t get enough money, are you not going on a honeymoon?
