How to dye metal silver finish keys to a bronze finish?

Thecane428, on March 24, 2014 at 6:08 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

I got the idea to incorporate keys into my invitations. My colors are champagne and a light pink with hints of gold. I wanted the keys bronze so it can go with the rest of the stuff i am planning on using. I found bronze keys but i bought these silver ones because i loved the design and i figured i can always change the color. Problem is I have no idea how to change the color :o (well how to change it to where it looks nice.)

I say spray paint. We bought a ton of birdcages and other stuff in random colors - silver, bronze, pink and we stray painted everything the same color.

Any spray paint you ladies recommend? I bought one that was super shiny.

Check out the Rustoleum brand. They're really great for this sort of thing. Down the road I may use it to update our peeling brass doorknobs throughout the house to something else. The spray paint from this brand comes in lots of colors. I haven't used it yet but I've heard really good things. Good luck!

I have nothing constructive to add, but won't these make your invites really expensive to send?

I second rustoleum brand. You can get satin or matte finish on it and their colors really stick to metal.

Just make sure you take it slow, hold the spray can far enough away, do thin coats, and take your time! It makes a huge difference and you won't have drips.

Since it's a slick finish, it may help to do a primer coat first. There's spray paint primer too! But it may not be necessary. We only spray painted wooden items so we didn't need it.

I agree with everyone - Rustoleum is the best and there are a ton of color options and types available to get a vintage look.

If you use Rustoleum you may want to go to their website for tips, like what color primer and such. Also can you hang the keys from something to paint them? That way you can spray all around without having to flip them.
