How to feel more comfortable getting doted on and finding the right stylist/mua?

Kari, on November 19, 2019 at 3:38 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 2

I'm a pretty easy going, low maintenance person who doesn't typically wear makeup or style my hair on a daily basis, but I do like getting dressed up and doing my own hair and makeup for events. I'm also a person who feels really awkward being doted on, and the thought of having my hair and makeup done for my own wedding is more terrifying than reassuring. I'm trying to get myself comfortable with the idea, but trying to find a hair stylist and MUA has been the least enjoyable part of planning for me.

As a low key lady, I'm finding it difficult to relate to people who do beauty for a living, and even though I have reached out to a couple stylist/MUA via email and social media, I still feel like a fish out of water.

Any tips for finding a stylist and MUA that is a good fit? I want to be able to feel comfortable with someone before spending money on trials. I've asked about pricing and availability, then tried to explain that I'm a bit nervous about makeup and hoping for a natural look (I am fair skinned and want a natural, everyday, fresh look) and do not want to feel like I am wearing heavy makeup. I have asked to see before/after shots of makeup to get a better idea of the MUA's capabilities and style. I don't have a hairstyle picked out yet, and still need to create a Pinterest board of things I like. I've got medium-long fine but plentiful wavy hair, so I think it should be easy enough to work with. Any other tips? What questions should I be asking?

Please help make this part less dreadful!

I’m similar to you. I ended up doing my own makeup, and my hair stylist was a junior stylist at the salon I usually go to (so it’s not like she’s usually a “wedding stylist” she works in a salon and just did this as an extra thing)

    Hey Kari!!

It’s totally normal to feel a little uncomfortable getting your makeup done, so of course, you want to find someone that you feel relaxed with. You certainly don’t want to feel like it is something that you must endure on the morning of your wedding. If you are really uncomfortable with the thought of having your makeup done, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing your own. Is this something that you have considered?

If you want to get your makeup done for your wedding, you could search around in local beauticians. This way you will be able to meet the MUA in person to get a feel for what they are like before booking a trial. It would also probably help to have some inspiration photos of what you would like your makeup to look like. The purpose of having a trial is to ensure that everything is exactly how you want it for your wedding day so don’t be afraid to ask questions and make changes to ensure you get the look that you want.

    What is your dress like?
