How to honor a former pet?

katiekies, on February 19, 2022 at 11:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hi! My fiancé and I have only been engaged for a couple weeks and haven't discussed major wedding details yet (just budget and guest size). Haven't announced our engagement yet either - I'm in the "honeymoon" phase of planning, just brainstorming and having fun looking at different places for inspiration.

Our dog ("P") passed away unexpectedly this afternoon, after escaping from his groomer. It is a shock and absolutely heartbreaking not to have him here with us, especially for my fiancé - while we only had P for a little over a year, we took him in after fiancé's brother (who owned him for the first 8 years of his life) moved to a non-pet-friendly location. So P was a part of the family long before I came into the picture.

I've been trying to research some different ways that we can honor P at our wedding, and I was hoping some of you here had ideas or advice. I'm open to anything right now, and would love to present fiancé with a few different options! (not right away, of course - time to grieve is needed before we discuss anything future-related)

    So sorry for your loss!
These days I have seen a lot people putting images of their pets on the reception cocktail napkins. You could choose your favorite image of him and go to someone who prints custom ones.

At one wedding I attended, the bride had little picture charms of her passed loved ones hanging from the wrap on her bouquet. Perhaps you could hang a small charm symbolizing him on your bouquet wrap as well. Smiley heart

Those are beautiful ideas, thank you Erin Smiley heart

I don't plan on having a bouquet, but the cocktail napkins sound unique - never would've thought of something like that! I'll look into it some more.

We are honoring my beloved dog that passed away a few years ago, she was my baby for 13 years. She was cremated and I have some of her ashes in a necklace that I'm going to wear. We are also having a spot for pictures of family that we lost and her picture will be there too.

    That's beautiful Lynne Smiley heart

Fiancé and his brother (the two main owners of P in his 9 years of life) chose not to keep the ashes - the animal hospital said they'll be scattered in a location with other doggy ashes, which I love.

The pictures of loved ones sounds like a nice idea. Fiancé has no remaining grandparents, and he lost an uncle tragically about a decade ago. I lost my Grandpa before our first anniversary. We could definitely add pictures of P to a tribute table or something.

We're having a destination wedding so our pup won't be able to be there. I just ordered some engraved cufflinks for my FH to wear on our wedding day and might order myself a matching cuff bracelet! I love that you're wanting to honor your lost furbaby in your wedding 💛
