How to incorporate your interests/hobbies?

JulieR, on May 8, 2015 at 12:09 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 18

So I have seen some really great ideas on here for incorporating things about you as a couple into your wedding decor without making it over the top. Are you doing this in any way, and if you are how are you doing it??

I really want to find a way to incorporate our love of animals, but am struggling to find something that works nicely. Any ideas?

Maybe name your tables with animals instead of numbers Smiley smile

Fh and I love building lego models. To incorporate that we have a lego cake topper, lego mini storage box as our ring holder for the ceremony, and I bought him silver lego cufflinks. I'll have to think on how you can incorporate animals.

A friend of my brother made homemade dog treats and catnip toys as their favors. They have like 5 pets and she works at a rescue. (Hope it's ok I'm posting their pics. I just pulled them off the internet.)

Oh! Something I have seen. In one wedding they spray painted plastic animals gold and used them as place card holders. You could do that and use them as place cards holders, escort cards or to hold the table number.

I work with Historical Newspapers so I'm having a newsboy pass out newspaper programs at our 1920s wedding. My FH loves music, so I bought him musical note cuff links, and his bout will reflect it. He also loves cars so I'm spray painting matchbox cars gold and setting a couple around, maybe by the grooms cake. I love to read, write poetry so I have frames with quotes I've written or are from favorite books and are placing them all around.

@Katherine I love the Lego ideas!!

And that's a good idea with plastic animals for escort cards too. I'll have to look into that and run it by FH.

@Julie, your favors could be animal crackers.

Signs and random little things. My bouquet is origami flowers with comic book paper in them. I asked everyone what they wanted in them. could be pages from a favorite book or sheet music of a song or comic pages. I just looked them up and printed them.

So far we are going to have a TARDIS card box, geeky entry music, and possibly a Doctor Who guest book. Our colors are also TARDIS blue and purple.

I say take any part of your wedding that you are incorporating and make it an aspect of your passion / interest / hobby, whatever. Symbolism in a wedding is the most beautiful part in my opinion.

Here's where we're incorporating our symbolism / interests: We met because we ride motorcycles. We are going down the aisle on our motorcycles (as is the pastor, wedding party, ring bearer on powerwheels motorcycle, etc) We are playing biker type songs and having a biker reading (not trashy, classy but still biker and awesome. I can post text if interested)

We are also both on the fire dept. The reception is going to be firefighter themed. For grand entrance, we are arriving on the fire engine. There will be a double line honor guard of firefighters holding pike poles in an arch for us to walk thru the tunnel - while a kilted bagpiper plays. We are doing a small short tribute to fallen firefighters. Then we'll have dinner at a head table that has a fire engine sign as a 'front-drop' and a large wall of flames as a back-drop. Our centerpieces are designed tolook like flames. Card box is a fire engine, DJ request drop is a fire boot. Punch dispenser is a hydrant. Cake is a building on fire. Cupcakes are flame-frosted. First dance is a firefighter tribute song (For You - Keith Urban) and we will do a choreographed dance with a tribute video showing on the wall behind us.

So, just take any element of the wedding you can and customize it to fit your interests

FH hunts and I'm putting antlers on the tables...along with my antique wooden boxes, mason jars and flowers. It's subtle but there. Rachael's dog treat ideas are adorable!

I have this huge obsession with giraffes that FH always teases me about. I showed him a custom cake topper from Etsy, and he actually loved it! We ended up ordering a cake topper that is a bride and groom giraffe, but the groom giraffe is wearing a Packers jersey (his favorite team) and a cheesehead. He actually thinks that it's really cool, and I love it simply because of the giraffes! I haven't told FH, but my garter is also Packers related. I'm hoping to keep it a surprise. Another way we are incorporating ourselves into the wedding is our first dance song. Rather than picking some song off the radio like "Thinking Out Loud" or something, we decided to go with either "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young or "Helplessly Hoping" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. FH is a huge music junkie, but although he's only 23, he likes much older music. We love fall, so we plan on ordering a different kind of guestbook; I found one that is a huge tree with different painted leaves that the guests sign. I'm hoping we can find other ways to incorporate our personalities into the big day!

We're thinking about incorporating one of our hobbies as a cake topper.

My favorite personal touch is our cake topper. We both are into cars and racing. We also took some of our e-pics with his car and are using those pictures as part of our photobook guestbook.

Table names are an easy place to incorporate your interests/hobbies.

They have reay cute animal cake toppers. This is probably what we will use to incorporate our furbabies. I'm using books as our centerpieces since we both love to read. Our weddings colors are his favorite color and mine. Other than that, I probably won't do too much. I don't want it to seem too much like a theme.

Yeah @Jackie, I would be worried about it taking over and seeming too much like a theme. The cake topper idea is another good idea. We were originally going to just have flowers on top of the cake, but it's something to look into.
