How to keep bugs off of cake!

Felicity, on March 16, 2021 at 9:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
For those of you who have had outdoor setting for your weddings (we have a barn wedding), how did you keep bugs from getting into the cake or desserts? Any ideas are appreciated!

It would gross me out if flies are all over our cake and cupcakes.🤢

With COVID, I wound individually wrap cupcakes even if inside. If you’re doing a single tier for your cake, could you put it on a covered stand? How to keep bugs off of cake! 1

I've never thought about that, and I didn't have my wedding in a barn, but that's a good question. If you're doing a tiered cake, what do you think about a hanging bug net (like you'd see over a bed) and decorating it like a veil? Nothing too much but something to make it "bridal" -- perhaps beading on the edges or a little sparkle here and there on the net.

Never seen this happen at an outdoor wedding. I honestly don't see this being an issue.

Love these suggestions!! I found an old posting of this topic with similar suggestions of what other brides have done in the past - https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/outdoor-wedding-cake-bugs/dce845f2aca4c057.html?page=2

I actually had that happen even indoors! I had like a fly around my cake but my MOH was so good at swatting it away haha. Anyway there are probably some insect repellent candles can put around

I order to get to that barn, it is usually loaded on a carrier cart, and transferred to another cart at the venue. Every venue I have every worked that has cake or any array of desserts in an unscreened place owns a refrigerated cart with a glass top. Not cold, but enough so real butter frosting or pastry creams won't melt. or rush in every time the door is opening.
Most people have at least seen these pastry and cake carts in fancy restaurants.
Often case can be rented from a cake place. Many there is a limit to how big a wedding cake can be displayed whole. How to keep bugs off of cake! 3
On wheels, similar to ones in shops. They make tabletop one 68" wide, small fridge unit bottom few inches then 15-18" deep and 10-12 inches high, too. I don't do much catering except some fancy inns any more, and they all use their courtyard and lawn and pavilion spaces.Ask your place.

We have opted to keep it refrigerated until serving time. Now that we are outdoors we really dont want a bug magnet and with covid we don’t need any contaminates. It’s funny, I’ve been binge watching the show four weddings and now when I see the cakes on display on the show and all the guests around it to look at it and talking on it, it freaks me out. I can’t unthink anything covid related. It’s all I can think about

Yes I talked to my baker and venue owner and we came to the same conclusion.
