How to keep hair curled?

Christina, on August 3, 2021 at 7:38 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 2 14

I am getting my hair done at a salon in the morning, for my afternoon wedding. My style is half-up and curled, and I had my trial last week. It looked great, but the curls fell out so fast and definitely won't last until my ceremony! Does anyone have experience with this? Of course I could re-curl on my own later in the day, but I was wondering about something like a hair net to try and keep it nice until the ceremony?

A LOT of hairspray! My hair hates to hold a curl and I had my hair down for my engagement shoot so this is why my lady did. It looked lovely but I didn't trust it for a full day, so I'm having it up and pinned so I don't need to worry about it dropping.

So we did a mini ceremony last year and my curls didn’t even hold up before our first look. But my stylist told me to try heartless curls and get hair rollers or braid your hair and it worked! I got the octocurl off Amazon slept with my hair wet and it stayed perfectly curly for 2 days! I was so impressed because I’m just like you with a curler it doesn’t even last an hour!

I would also reach out to your hair stylist to see if your trial was how it was going to be for the Day Of, because trials are usually done quicker and less hold than it would be for Day Of. I would think it was the "trial" version and not the "real deal" version.

I'm not sure if it'll work with your texture hair or not, but I would recommend flexi rods.

I think this is something you need to discuss with your stylist because it sounds to me like either the stylist didn't do a very good job, or the stylist didn't know that your hair doesn't hold curls well and didn't put enough product in because of it.

I have long thick hair which does not hold curls (bouncy blowouts are my favourite but literally fall flat before I leave the salon) and I've found only 2 stylists who have actually understood this and had the technique and skill to style my hair well enough so that the curls hold nicely and all day long.

This happened to me too and the stylist recommended using mousse in my hair before I dried it the day before. Hopefully putting that product in will help the curls hold on more!

I have fine hair. I had extensions and a ton of hairspray! The curls held. The stylist also told me to wash my hair the day before, not the day of.

Everyone's hair is a bit different, so using the right products make a huge difference. I have fine hair, but a lot of it, and I have mixed results with it holding curls. My hair is naturally wavy (probably 2A or 2B).

If I use a light hold mousse (
this product) and curl my hair myself using a curling wand, it will stay all day. If I use hair spray in addition to that, it will stay for multiple days. I get consistent results with this combination of mousse and curling wand, and my curls are soft and pliable. I can either wash, mousse, dry and curl all on one shot, or apply the mousse to freshly washed hair, let air dry, and then curl the next day with similar results. I do apply heat protectant before curling as well.

One hairstylist I used curled my hair with a flat iron and some product and those curls stayed for days. My hair was very soft, not stiff or crunchy at all, but a tiny bit tacky due to the product (she was testing out products in my hair for an updo, and needed something with a bit of grab for styling). She applied product before curling, and I can't remember if she applied anything after.

I've had friends and other hairstylists use curling irons or flat irons to attempt to curl my hair, plus hairspray, and those curls do not hold. For me, I think the difference is getting a light hold product into my hair
before trying to curl it. Just applying hairspray after makes my hair heavy and the curls tend to fall out, plus it makes my hair feel crunchy and stiff.

I would definitely recommend using a mousse prior to curling to see if that makes a difference!

Hi Monica! I just wanted to let you know doing mousse before curling works well for me. I apply this product to wet hair, then let air dry or blow dry, and then curl and my curls hold all day. For our wedding celebration I was told to not wash my hair for a day or two before because we were doing an updo, so I washed my hair and applied mousse the day before, then curled it and styled it the next day and had beautiful results.

Hi Kari! Thank you so much! That was my plan as well to wash my hair tomorrow, do the mousse and then my wedding is on Friday so style then. I'm so glad to hear this worked for you! Thank you for taking the time to tell me, that relieved some worries I had about it! 😁

No problem! I was nervous about applying it to my wet hair, letting it dry, and then styling later on (a day or two after application vs right away) but it worked really well, just as well as when I use the mousse and style immediately after. I have had good luck with that product because it isn't too stiff at so when dried in my unstyled hair it still feels fine. Good luck and I hope you have a beautiful wedding!

I second using mouse, and my stylist pins my curls to my head while they are still hot for at least 15 minutes, then hair spray (but not too much or it will actually weigh them down)

Don't wash your hair the day of, put some mousse in it and maybe even root boost too. And then let the curls cool completely before finger combing etc. Then hairspray!
