How to make it, not tacky?

Gladys, on October 9, 2012 at 3:42 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 19

Hello everyone! Smiley smile

I'm new to WW and in the midst of planning my wedding. Well, actually we've been planning for years but finances always seems to get the best of us, and we have to keep postponing. Smiley sad

Anyways, I'm planning on doing this epic halloween wedding, and I have everyone telling me that I should just buy halloween decorations each year when they go on clearance to use it to decorate. Fine and dandy and all, but while it's a Halloween wedding, I still want it to look good, not super tacky, and having just a mish mash of decorations tossed in a room. And with Halloween coming up soon, I figured I'd start getting ideas for it now, so if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I love me some Halloween! I've seen some gorgeous Halloween cakes out there, and I believe there are a few Halloween brides on the boards. You can definitely get some ideas on how to make it classy.

I think you can't go wrong with spiderwebs, to make it look a little old and spooky. I'd stay away from kitschy stuff -- pumpkin garlands, neon green and purple together. Do you have Pinterest? I'm sure you can find great ideas there... I'm off to try and find some pictures for you! Smiley smile

I would do Halloween colors and then add a touch of decorations. I'd do mine orange yellow and white like candy corn Smiley smile maybe a touch of black!

I love Pinterest. Haven't seen much in line of Halloween type things on there but then, I haven't been on in awhile and now it's Oct. I might have an easier time.

    Those pics. are amazing.

A candy buffet is cool, though I was kind of thinking along the lines of having like "Trick or treat" stations, since there'll be little kids there and I think they'd get a kick out of it.

Well, I'm really hoping for 2014 to be married, but considering our case of bad luck that seems to happen, 2015 is a safe cushion of time to get things saved up and figured out.

OMG, Gladys, right now I know of at least 4 Halloween wedding cakes I have pinned, but I can't post them from work. :/ They exist, I promise!

When in doubt, do a Google image search for Halloween weddings -- half the pictures are getting blocked for me, so I can't tell if they're any good, but you are bound to find tons of inspiration!

Google, now why didn't I think of that? I live on Google practically.

I'm just getting frustrated by some of my family that are all "Well you want a Halloween wedding! Of course it's going to look tacky so just buy all the clearance stuff to use for decorations!" Gah. Just because I want a Halloween wedding doesn't mean I want it to be tacky. Geeze. Have some faith in me people.

No, no, I've seen some pictures of wonderfully done Halloween weddings. I would have done that if FH loved Halloween as much as I do, and even I love it, but not enough to do a wedding, ya know? But I love looking at pictures.

Oh, also check out Offbeat Bride -- they have some Halloween/Day of the Dead weddings on there, I believe, lots of great ideas!

I officiated a Halloween wedding that was rather subtle. The bride had a somewhat gothic looking gown, the groomsmen wore burnt orange shirts & black slacks, bridesmaids were in black dresses. Tablecloths were dark purple.

Or you could do autumn leaf colors.

I'm doing a non-tacky Halloween wedding! Our colors our plum, black, and a hint of orange. I'm doing a candy bar that will have a sign that says "trick-or-treat" on it, and I'm using orange and purple fairy lights to decorate. Our save the dates have little jack-o-lanterns on them, and the dishes for the head table are a Halloween china pattern. FH didn't want a lot of Halloween, but was good to go on the colors. I think it goes tacky when you use skeletons and ghosts, and zombies, etc. But there are some cute zombie cake-toppers out there! Our table names are posters of retro horror movies. Let me start posting pics!!!!

    1.Table mock-up

    2. The dinner plate (I got these at target but I believe they are sold out! Found them on ebay but they are overpriced on there).

    3. Table names

Here's the save the date, and the link to my original inspiration! I am doing a retro Halloween wedding, so that is why I added the old time horror movie posters, and I'm using black lace, etc.

Kimm P. gave me some great templates to use that are kind of elegant and have some spider webs and stuff on them too. I have them, if you want to private message me I can send them to your e-mail. And here's that link to my original inspiration! I forgot to send it! Lol.

FYI, I told my mom I was having a Halloweenish wedding and she was like "So do you want everyone to dress up in costume?" I think people assume it is all Halloween, no wedding! Sad, but true. And since I'm a crazy Halloween person, I can understand, but FH is keeping me in line!

I dont' know what your budget is like, but I think these would be really cute on reception tables:

And I don't think I could pass up on a Halloween Candy Buffet Smiley smile There are also funkins, which are those pumpkins that can be carved just like the real thing, but which are made out of some kind of foam/plastic thing and last for years. They look pretty realistic, and no wilting Smiley smile Jack-o-lantern table numbers could be really cool.

I would stay away from paper cutouts, and anything that's too creepy or gore-y that would take away from the wedding-ness, I think.

Halloween Bride: I love your ideas! <3 And the table set up looks really awesome, as well as the save the date card.

Mika: I love the candleholders. Those are actually really cute. Smiley smile

I just saw these on Pinterest - not tacky at all.

    http://www.marthastewart.com/858108/cheesecloth-spirits?center=0&gallery=858105&slide=852844

I would also explore Martha's website for more on non tacky ideas. And watch for those traditional wedding items that might be turned into more of a Halloween theme by just changing the color - Like a lantern by using both orange and black candles.
