How to make the hmu trial count?

K, on June 28, 2021 at 12:23 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 11
Hello! This weekend I am going in for my hair and makeup trial. This is the only one I will be able to do, as our wedding is in September and also in another state. This is the only time we will be flying out there before the wedding.

Does anyone have any tips on making the trial really count? I want to walk out of it feeling like we have at least a rough plan, and I want to feel confident about my look and not freaking out that I have to scramble to find someone else.
p.s. I don’t know who the stylist will be. This is through a salon that offers bridal services, but I think they’re just going to assign whoever is available to me on that day.
Thank you!

Bring lots of pictures and ideas of what you want, don't be afraid to speak up if you don't like it. Bring any hair accessories (if any) to make sure they will work with the hairstyle you want (tiara, hair piece, veil, etc...) Keep the style of your dress in mind when picking a hair style, you wouldn't want your hair down with an illusion back dress.

Do not let them push you out just bc your "time" is up. I've done a trial and they always seem to be schedule for a short out of time. . .hour for both. Especially since you won't be able to get back to them prior to the wedding.

Take a lot of inspiration pics and take a lot of pics of your end result. Also keep on mind trials are not usually polished like the final look is going to be.
Stand your ground and don't settle until you are happy. I've been reading a lot on here about HMU lately and lots of people are seeming not satisfied with their trials. Speak up is my best advise!

I was in the same boat although I did it through a MUA instead of a salon. I got my trail done in April along with my engagement pictures in the state we will be getting married. I live in a different state and my wedding isn’t until September. I had pictures of what style I wanted just by browsing through their IG page and told the MUA to change a few things like eyeshadow colors and etc. For my hair, I wanted my engagement pics to look different from the day of so went with something completely different instead.

I agree with the others. Take your time, take lots of inspiration pictures with you, and go through what you like about each one before you start. Take lots photographs afterward in different light to get an idea of how it might look. Try to give specific feedback about what you want changed/added. Feel free to share here - sometimes people can't articulate what they do or don't like, just that something is 'missing' - but makeup is a huge hobby of mine so feel free to let me know if you need help with that!

Thanks everyone!! This is all really great advice. My big fear is that they will be really far off the mark and will basically say “well, time is up” at the end of the hour. And since I don’t have any other options, I’ll spend the next two months until my wedding worrying about how I’ll look. Good to know that I can press for more time. Unfortunately I don’t have a really specific idea of what I want— there are several looks I am interested in and I want to see how all of them will look!

In this case, I would explain what you like about each one, and ask the makeup artist for their advice before they begin to work.

I would then bring the finished look here, and we can help you figure out what you'd like changed next time around!

Equally, would you like to share your inspiration? Maybe we can help you pinpoint whether there is a commonality between the looks so you feel more confident going into your appointment

Wow, thank you for being so helpful! I would love some advice going into this. Here are some of the hairstyles I like. Keeping in mind, I have very fine and thin, above-shoulder-length hair. I plan to use some extensions to achieve one of these looks How to make the hmu trial count? 1

I’m leaning toward the bun because I feel like they would have to be really bad to not be able to do it, so it feels like a safe bet

And I really have no idea with my makeup. Here is a picture Of what I normally do max. I have a weird face shape— big, pointy chin and a bump in my nose that I’d like to downplay if possible. But the one time I had contouring done it looked awful.

And I’ve also included a pic of something I would mayyybe like? I think I would really like a deep red lip, at least in theory. But I have thin lips so idk if that’s a bad idea? How to make the hmu trial count? 4How to make the hmu trial count? 5

    Aha.

So a soft, retro hairstyle, and what looks like a soft, taupe smoky eye and a berry lip.

I think you have a lovely face and not odd-looking at all! And you should definitely play up your eyes with that smoky look as they're beautiful and striking. Kate Middleton often does a similar look - either using a shimmery or a matte smoky taupe, which is a lot softer than black and sitll bridal.

Here's some pics which might be a bit clearer to show your makeup artist:

hair wise, I think you should start out by asking for one of the more complex styles. Then, if you're not happy with the end-result, you can still go for the bun!
