How to preserve flowers the night before when you don't have a fridge?

Bee, on May 18, 2013 at 7:37 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 16

I don't have room in any of the refrigerators or coolers because of the extensive amount of beverages we are offering, and we also won't have time to set the tables the morning of. If I put A LOT of ice in the centerpiece vases the day before, will they look beautiful the next day for the wedding stilll? Does anyone have other suggestions? It should be between 65-70 during the day and the lowest temperature over night no lower than 50.

They are: hydrangeas, roses and carnations

Yes, there is no room. We are at max capacity for the fridges. Thanks.

What about a garage or basement? These may be cooler than the rest of the house.

    This link maybe helpful:

Also, you probably shouldn't put ice in the vases.

Thanks Barbara! According to this I should try to keep them in a cool place before the wedding but it is ok to have them in a warmer room the night before to open them up more. Now, the dilemma is a fridge without fruit. :-/ Guess I will have to empty my fridge as much as I can this week and try to take shelves out so I can fit them all. It is going to be hard.

I think the max temp should be 75, but since you're not expecting temps over 70, you should be fine in any case.

What time is your wedding? If its later in the day, you can probably leave some of the drinks out until the morning of? Or maybe you'll just need to buy a new refrigerator! Smiley tongue good luck!

Do not put ice in the vases. yeah frige without fruit is a must. apples will rot flowers faster than anything. out all night to open would be okay. a/c would be good to keep them fresh.

Part of the problem is the buttercream cupcakes, the baker said they need to be cool until 45 minutes before so they will take up a lot of space. :-/ You are right though, we could leave out a lot of stuff all night and never put it in the fridge. Instead I will just ice it early since the reception starts at 2pm. I still dont know if I will be able to have them all in the fridge. It seems like as long as they are cool before hand it will be fine. Thanks!

Thanks MJ! I dont think it has a/c but I can turn fans on. If it had a/c I would just crank it down to super cool. ;-)

Mine I made Friday and had the wedding Sunday, kept at room temp with no issue and they stayed alive for wa week + after. The boutineers and corsages were the only things I refrigerated and there's a box you can get at hobby lobby to keep those fresh for the fridge. Sprinkle water on the top and put them in

A friend put her flowers in the basement of her aunts home. When they transported them from her aunts to the location, she put them on dry ice.

I don't know anything about flowers (we aren't doing any).. but what about just like a normal lunch box cooler just to keep it slightly cooler than room temperature?

A smalll cooler with ice inside of a larger cooler. that way it will be cold but the ice won't damage the flowers.

I'm going to have a similar situation for the flowers I am DIYing (just some baby's breath arrangements) so I went out and bought some from where I am buying them from, did a test run of them sitting in warmer weather than expected and they lasted about a week at room temperature.

I did rose bouquets for my niece's wedding and their fridge wasn't big enough to put them in there so we simply placed them in the coolest room in the house with very cold water in the vases. They did just fine.
