How to Review this Situation? (long Story Sorry)

NextChapterReady, on November 1, 2019 at 10:56 AM Posted in Planning 0 10

So I picked out a bridesmaid dress with my bridesmaids who fell in love with it. Unfortunately there were a lot of issues and stress that ended up coming along with this dress.

So this was the dress we purchased in the designer's photo.

The dress they had in the store to try on was all black.

The only thing about the red we didn't like was the necklace had bright red thread throughout it and I thought that looked a bit gaudy. So I asked to have it custom made as the red dress, but with the black necklace. We tried to put the exact fabric over the black dress to envision it.

Red Dress with Black NecklaceHow to Review this Situation? (long Story Sorry) 3

The shop is a mom and pop shop and run by the owner and her husband. She does all the ordering and also alterations. I told her, I want this dress just like the red dress except with a black necklace. As you can see the dress has an illusion neckline and I asked her, if that was red or nude. She said, oh that's red, but it's very fine in color, like with the black dress mesh. You can't even tell it's on the dress. So I said, alright I want the dress to be exactly like the red one shown in the picture except with a black necklace.

All of my girls ordered this dress in early February and she promised it would be in by may. Then come June, I called her and she said due to shipping issues with China it would be in by the end of June at the latest. In July, I called the store again and got her husband. He told me that the dresses were never supposed to arrive before the END of July. When I tried to say I was originally told May, he told me I was mistaken. So the dresses ended up coming in around July 20th. When I saw the dress, I was startled because the mesh looked NOTHING like the designer's photo of the dress. It looked garish red. When I brought this up to the owner, she told me, it disappears into the skin and you won't even see it! I picked up my SIL's dress bc she's out of town, took it home, and ended up trying it on just to see what it looked like. This was the result.

What Actually ArrivedHow to Review this Situation? (long Story Sorry) 4

I was horrified. This dress was $215 and looked like an awful Chinese knockoff! It was almost Fushia! The actual dress I loved, but the mesh itself looked beyond terrible and was totally distracting and ugly. I called the shop the next morning and asked if there was any way they could fix it by swapping out the mesh with a nude color and they said they would have to order fabric from China and maybe not even then.

So I called around and found a seamstress who could do it in the timeframe for the wedding, but she said it would be $600 ($100 for each dress). I knew I couldn't ask my bridesmaids for this and didn't have the budget for it myself but they looked so bad I made an appointment. I went to the store to get the rest of the girls' dresses and was told by the owner that she had already ordered the mesh and was going to fix them. I was frustrated and said, you literally said you couldn't do that so I called someone else. She says it was just a miscommunication. I finally said, I don't understand how this looks so different from designer's photo on the website. She let me know that she'd never seen that picture and didn't know what it looked like. I showed her again and she said, well that dress had nude mesh. You specifically said you wanted it custom built with red. I said, no I wanted it to look like the picture (which you told me was red). Did you specifically alter the dress? She was like of course! I told the manufacturer to replace the original mesh with a bright red to match the dress.

I told her I definitely never said that and finally she said, well maybe she had been confused and ordered the wrong thing. She offered to fix all of the dresses for free, but I was reluctant after all of the things that had gone wrong and when I told her so, she was very offended, went into the back of her shop where a lady was paying for a ring bearer outfit and asked her to "vouch for her abilities as a seamstress" and let the lady know I didn't think I could trust the owner. I had the stranger tell me how wonderful she was. In the end, I realized I just couldn't afford the alterations on my own. So I agreed to let her do them. She ended up getting them to the girls one week before my wedding which was stressful. The end result was gorgeous and exactly what I had envisioned.

It Finally Came Out RightHow to Review this Situation? (long Story Sorry) 5

She did do the change for free and admitted to her mistake, but I'm not sure how to review her work. I want to be honest, but also fair and I don't know if I should just not review her at all? It was an exhausting and stressful process.

I think I would post a review similar to what you said here, completely honest and giving credit where credit was due. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably give them three stars. I would definitely deduct at least two stars for the hassle and downright miscommunication over and over again, I can't imagine. But they did turn out beautiful and thankfully she rectified the situation. I do think you should review them honestly with the whole story as you did here, other brides deserve to know the struggle you went through so they can avoid taking a risk if that's a regular occurrence (hopefully not) for this business. So glad they FINALLY turned out just the way you wanted though, they look beautiful!

I think an honest review could potentially save another bride the same hassles.

I agree you should review and copy paste exactly what you said here. Some brides are on really tight timelines and might decide not to use her when they read about all the delays, and that could be helpful for them. It's also good to see that there were stressful screw ups, but in the end they did right by you. Some brides might want to skip all the stress, others might be ok just knowing going into it that they need to be careful.

I would probably not go into as much detail - I say that only because in reading through your whole description, I totally thought you wanted the custom red mesh with the black necklace too. Obviously there was miscommunication on that with both of you thinking you were being very clear. I'd be p***ed about the timing thing for sure and the way the mixup was initially handled.

If it were me, I would probably leave a 4 star review. The miscommunication on the dress customization and timing would have dropped them to a 3, but the fact that it was fixed for free and ended up looking perfect, would have bumped them back up to a 4.

Bullet points for the review would be: -

-gorgeous dresses that are able to be customized

-very disappointing miscommunication on the item customization, misled on timing of arrivals, incorrect statement that they cant fix the dresses

-in the end, they were able to fix the incorrect customization, didn't charge you, and the dresses ended up looking perfect

I would give 3 or 4 stars and add what you said here for context. Make sure you compliment how they did get the job done and done well in the end, but explain that the process and communication were frustrating overall. I would also emphasize that any bride or bridesmaid needs to make sure a few times that the lady owner is crystal clear on any plans or alterations to the design before the order is placed, and encourage them to get it in writing if necessary so there is no confusion about the orders!

It's a confusing and long story so sorry it didn't get communicated well in the post. At the time of ordering the dress. I specifically showed her the designer photo and said i want it to look just like this image but with the black necklace. She said okay and asked about the mesh if I wanted it black like the necklace. I told her no I want it to look like the photo, isn't that nude? She corrected me and said this dress has a red mesh but it looks nude doesn't it? I said, okay well i want whatever the original dress has because I like that look. She said alright so only change the necklace? And i said yes, only the necklace. So there was absolutely NO misunderstanding about the mesh. She later went while ordering and custom changed the mesh as well and I have no idea why. I was super clear on it and clarified. The mesh was always nude, she was wrong and then custom ordered it wrong, so that's super frustrating to me. As to your point about reviewing I think you're right, and I think a 3/3.5 sounds pretty fair as well! Thank you for your advice! Smiley smile

Well sounds like it was confusion between the both of you because the end result nude also does not look like the original photo. The original photo does look to have a pale pale red mesh just like the black. But if they changed the mesh to a darker red they still screwed it up. 3 stars and the explanation of what happened should be good. Weddingwire creates averages as you rate a bunch of things so my review scores for my venue across different websites are different because the knot and google don't let you give half stars.

Oh I haven't reviewed anyone yet so good to know about half stars not being available for some! I definitely plan to post the reviews on multiple platforms bc most of my vendors were fabulous!

Also the mesh that originally came on the dress before customization is the same as was added to our dresses for the wedding.

I’d write a review, give 3 or maybe 4 stars and say you were : happy with the end result and the quality of the seamstress’s work but that the overall experience was peppered with miscommunication with regards to customization and timeline. That you were ultimately Happy with the end result, but stressed in the meantime.

For me, a goal of a review is to provide usable information when it’s not as simple as “highly recommend” or “avoid like the plague!” In this instance, I’d think the take away would be not to
avoid the shop or the customizations, but if going with them to be sure to be very specific and check carefully receipts of what was ordered to ensure they’re all correct , so that would play into my mind when framing my review.

Oh my, that's quite a stressful situation! So happy they turned out the way you wanted. The red mesh definitely doesn't look as nice as the nude! I didn't even realize there was mesh there at first. Love that neckline with the jewels, so pretty!!!
