Look at their reviews on multiple sites to make sure they're consistent. Also, meet with them and see what they are like. The best is honestly if you can get a referral from a friend who has used them before. If you know someone who recently got married, see if they recommend any of their vendors. We found our photographer that way and loved working with him.

First, make a list of what your "must haves" are for that vendor. For a videographer, what length of video are you looking for? How many hours do you need? What extras (raw footage, second shooter, etc) do you want included? For a DJ, what extras (uplighting, photo booth, etc) do you want included? How many hours? Do you want them for ceremony and reception or just reception? For photographer, how many hours do you need? Do you want a second shooter included? What photo style do you prefer? What printing/sharing rights do you want?

Once you figure out what you need, also consider your budget. Look online for vendor options in your area that include your "must haves" that are also in your budget. Ask friends for recommendations as well. From there, narrow it down to 3-4 that you'd like to meet, and setup a meeting with each one. Ask about postponing/cancellation policies, timeframe it takes to get the product (video, photos, etc) after the wedding, deposit info, experience, etc. Pick someone who you feel would be easy to work with and who meets all your criteria.

You will want to start by reading reviews to see what past couples have to say about the person. You will also want to make sure they fit what you are looking for. For example, if you want Mexican food you'd want to make sure you hire a caterer that specializes in that area or you could end up very disappointed. I would also see if your venue has a recommended list of vendors. If they do, I'd read their reviews and see if they would match what you are looking for. Once you have narrowed it down, I would recommend meeting with them or talking to them on the phone to make sure you click.

Communication is key. I was really excited with the variety our rental company had... but after giving a deposit, the communication has been less than perfect. The table we wanted went missing... the pictures and measurements for particular items have never been shared with us... I’m constantly having to check what they put on the rental list after I email updates because they really don’t listen.

The rest of the vendor team is on top of their game... just wish it would be the same for the rentals.

Communication and reviews are important as PP mentioned. Also listen to your gut feeling. How do you feel speaking with these vendors? Is the communication going smoothly, are they able to answer your questions in a timely manner and professionally, and def make sure to see how they’re handling COVID. Do NOT rush to book a vendor. It can seem overwhelming with so many things needing to be done, but make sure you feel comfortable and confident with your choice. Also make sure to read the contract a few times and adjust as needed. I also joined a few Facebook groups for New Jersey brides because I’m in NY and don’t really know a lot of the local vendors in NJ. So I’ll ask for some feedback regarding a specific vendor or ask for recommendations. Lastly don’t forget to have fun planning! 🤗♥️
