How to sell a unused wedding dresses?

alison, on October 2, 2015 at 2:19 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

Can anyone help me. My mom and I are looking to sell my sister's unused still with the tags on it wedding dress. She bought it when she got engaged to some slimeball guy a few years ago. Well long story short that wedding never happened, thank god. But I myself just got recently engaged and my mom is trying to sell the dress and put that money towards my wedding. Before you all ask, my sister us totally ok with it, and the dress is 4 sizes too small for me, and our styles are completely different. But we can't find any good websites that buy dresses. We've tried buy/sell/trades on Facebook but no luck. We don't want to go online to Craigslist, or sell it to a consignment shop either. Any help, thanks

I bought my dress on preownedweddingdresses.com Some of the dresses listed say new with tags. I think its a one time fee of $25 to list it there though. Good luck!

I had a horrid time trying to sell an unaltered brand new wedding dress. After a year, I gave up and just gave it over to a consignment shop.

You can try consignment shops, but you only get a certain % of the sale price. If they can't sell it, it goes on the $99 rack. You can try Craigslist, preownedweddingdresses.com, and Tradsey, but I had no luck with any of them. I ended up donating my dress to Brides Against Breast Cancer. I was going to send it to the Angel Gowns (they make funeral clothes for babies), but they had too many and weren't accepting any more at the time. This is my dress of regret BTW. Never altered, tags still on, etc. I even lowered the $ to $200. No one wanted it.

I actually bought my dress from kijiji, a local girl was selling it. I love it, I went over to her house and she let me try it on. I looked on tradesy and oncewed but thought they were all overpriced and kijiji was by far a better deal for me. That being said, I would be very hesitant to buy a dress that I could not see or try on first.

There were tons to chose from on local Kijiji, some had been posted for year with no sale. They were priced too high....I got a steal of a deal Smiley smile

I would look for consignment shops in your area. A coworker of mine had a brand new, never worn gown (her wedding was cancelled) and she brought it to a local bridal shop (owner owns consignment shop as well) and they bought it back at almost full price.

ETA: sorry, just noticed that you said you did NOT want to sell to a consignment shop. Not sure of your reasoning, but I would still consider it!

Consignment. I do consignment and I will be honest with you - you will not get more than $150 for it and that is IF - a huge IF - the right person comes in wanting the dress in that specific size or it can be altered to fit them. 9 times out of 10 they get marked down to $30 each to use for "bride of Frankenstein" costumes for Halloween.

If you don't want to go online or to Craigslist OR to a consignment shop... You're S.O.L. You have no other options.

ETA: Your only other option is to donate it and help someone else out.

ETA#2: By consignment shop, I mean a resale bridal salon. NOT an actual consignment shop.
