How to Shorten A Ballgown Dress with Lace Scalloped edges and no defined "waistline"?

Christine, on September 23, 2017 at 4:40 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

Hello, I just recently got my wedding dress from a sample sale, the dress was being discontinued so, even though I am short, I could not order it with a petite length. The dress has MANY layers and the top two main layers have lace detailing. I have read that often times, you can remove the lace detail on the bottom, hem, and then reapply it. However, I am very nervous to do that because of the various details such at the "stripes" of lace going down the skirt. I have also read that you can have it taken apart, shortened from the waistline, however, my dress has no defined waistline that I can see. I Love the show Reign and the wedding dress that she wore had added "pickups" (I guess you could call them) and I'm wondering if something like that could be done to my dress (starting above the bottom lace trim. Any thoughts or recommendations? Has anyone had something similar done to their dress instead of hemming? Thank you! Attached are my dress and the dress idea!

The dress is beautiful. Find a seamstress and ask what they can do for you. I would ask different opinions from other seamstress as well.

Thank you so much Frida! Yes, I tried on many dresses and fell in love with this one! I will definitely be visiting several seamstresses very soon!

I have an Aline dress & just needed to be hemmed up maybe 2 inches....once we added another layer of tulle underneath/poofed it out more; it no longer needs to be hemmed. Just a thought, if you only have a few inches to hem up.

The pick up on that dress you have posted also...I haven't seen that before; but do like the look : )

Thank you ambrok! I will have to measure it too see but even if I wear heels, I think it will be needing a hem of about 4 or 5 inches and possibly 6 to 8 if I wear flats.

I just happened to watch that episode around the time I got the dress and thought it was a great way to shorten without cutting! I'll have to see if a seamstress can pin it in a way that I could see how it looks since that bottom layer of lace is so thick (several inches wide), I don't want the pickups to look random because they are too high.

I have yet to see that sort of thing done on any other dress (like outside of TV).
