How to thank a coworker for a gift?

Gen, on May 8, 2019 at 11:00 AM Posted in Registry 0 5

Ok this seems like a fairly self-explanatory question lol but let me explain the situation... I have a coworker who works out of an office in a different state, but he travels a lot and is in my office about once a month, and I speak with him on the phone and work with him almost every day. (He's the manager of indirect sales and part of my job is sales support, so he isn't technically my "boss" but I do a lot of work helping him with projects and such.) We're definitely not "friends" at all and neither of us are under that impression lol, and he knows I'm not inviting any coworkers (and wouldn't be expecting to be invited anyway) but he always asks me how wedding stuff is going every time he sees me. Today he asked where we were registered so I told him, and said of course you absolutely don't have to get us anything, but literally within 5 minutes he had bought something off it for us, which is just so beyond nice of him.

Of course I will write him a thank you card but I am trying to figure out how to go about it...

(1) ask for his home address and send it there (that feels really awkward to do though, and he'll probably just tell me it isn't necessary to send a card)

(2) send it to the office he usually works out of (though it feels a little weird to send a wedding thank you card to anywhere work-related)

(3) wait until he's in my office next and give it to him then (this might be the best option, but I also don't want to draw attention to it at work by handing him something wedding-related, even though it's just a thank you)

What would you do?

I would just send it to his office if you don't want to ask for his home address. Put it in a simple, white envelope so it's not super wedding looking. No one will know the difference. We get personal mail delivered to where I work fairly regularly (like some packages, cards, magazines, etc).

Yeah that’s true, we have these fancy return address labels with my and FH’s names on them but maybe I’ll just send to his office and write out the return address instead of using the labels on the envelope, so it looks less wedding-y.

I’m just so used to trying to keep wedding stuff separate from work lol, like I never bring it up unless I’m directly asked a question because I know I can’t invite anyone from the office so I don’t want it to be weird!

I understand. My work threw me a wedding shower - I'm only inviting like three people. It was a nice gesture, but I'm like ugh.. wedding talk (not that I hate it, it's just more awkward at work).

Haha oh yeah I can’t even imagine, I feel like work showers have the potential to be so awkward! 😖 This coworker is always asking how things are going and tells me about what he and his wife did at their wedding and gives me advice and stuff lol, like I said he isn’t my boss but he is my superior I guess, and he’s like 20 years older than me so I think he feels like he’s mentoring me at work and is trying to help with my personal stuff too which is sweet I guess 😂

Just send the thank you to his office and be appreciative that he cares enough to share in your happiness. Sometimes people are just being nice, and we need to just accept it instead of making it weird.
