HR: Ideas on how to cover these mirrors

*~WiiFeY~*, on May 2, 2011 at 8:58 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18

I asked this a while back and got some pretty good ideas, but I'm still not sure what I want to do. So I thought I'd ask you ladies again- Especially since there are new ladies Smiley smile

Our house has these mirrors on the living room wall, which I do NOT like. The paneling at the bottom is not under the mirror, so if we took them off there would be big gaps. This house is not permanent, we bought it as a temporary thing until we can get a loan for a house (FS has to be self employed for 2 years, he's only bee SE for 1 year) so we're kind of on a 3 year plan. SO as far as removing the paneling or adding more, that's out of the question. We just want a simple fix.

We painted all day yesterday, but we put off painting that wall because we aren't sure what we're doing.

I have considered putting up curtain rods and hanging sheers over each mirror (an idea I got from last time I posted) and that's what I'll probably end up doing unless I find an idea I like more (cont)

We really wouldn't mind the mirrors if those stupid designs weren't on there. I think I'd be okay with leaving them if there was a way to remove it and just make them plain mirrors.

Some ideas I've received (just so I don't get a million repeats)

-Cover them with wallpaper and make them look like art. (I thought about this but it really wouldn't go with what we're doing with our living room)

-Take them down a put a piece of furniture to cover the gaps. This was kind of what I wanted to do at first, but although it doesn't look like it in this picture, the wall is actually pretty big and there is no piece of furniture that long and high. Unless, of course, we put a couch there.. But the tv would be directly beside it in that corner, so that would be odd.

In Belgium we've got mirrorfilm. Can't you put a film over the mirrors? That way the designs are gone? Or are the designs not in the mirror but on top?

You can also buy three white empty paintings as big as the mirrors put them in their place and let visitors write on them.

    Another idea pic

What if you took the mirrors down and painted a murals or hung large pictures in the spaces? Go to Home Depot and get some window film like this (see link) that you can put over it?

I think the curtains or the wall shelving that Annelies posted would be your best bet.

You could buy paintings/pictures to go over them, or you could do a photo collage type thing over them.

What is behind the mirrors? I would take them down and put up new drywall. The shelf idea above is also good, but take the mirrors down no matter what. It dates the house by having them up. People in the 70's and 80's should be shot for poor decorating.

Can the couch go along that wall? I like the book case idea. Can you just buy some plain mirrors to replace those?

Can you nail up a 2x4 (or the longer version of one) up at the top of the ceiling to account for the mirror bumping out and staple fabric to it? to cover the whole wall.

Or take the mirrors off and just staple fabric to cover the whole wall?

Take the mirrors off and a short book case to cover the paneling?

I think a curtain rods would work well too.

I don't know how much you want to change but you can always take the mirrors off frame them in base boards or casing and then paint in them a different colour like they are frames?#

I like your curtain idea. Or the full wall shelving unit idea.

The full wall shelving would look awesome, and a great selling point for when you go to resell in the future. for a less costly fix I'd go with the full wall fabric covering/curtains or maybe try the some decorative window film to adhere to the mirrors to change the way they look. They sell a frosted look window film as well as lots of different designs. You could see if any of the designs would look good with the rest of your decor.

Full shelving can get expensive...I like the curtain idea. You could do a fabric accent wall with it. Instead of just covering the mirrors cover the entire wall with a fabric in a nice color and then make it your focal point.

What about doing curtains across the entire wall? so that basically it looks as though one big curtain is over the wall...could add some fun color and texture pending on what you chose

I like the idea of curtains across the wall, then you might be able to put your sofa there or other furniture? I also like the idea of the shelving too.

What if you took the mirrors down, covered them with a cool fabric, then put them back up? Like these:

Here is a picture of a 'fabric wall' like mentioned above. It would run from floor to ceiling and you could get any color or pattern you wanted so it would go with your decor.

Ladies you have some great ideas! I like the idea of the curtin rode with fabric or adding fabric to the inside so they look like fabric panels. Both and quick and temporary fixes. I think the wall sized book case would be the best choice but it might get pricy. If you or FH is crafty it would be a great project and much more affordable.
