Huge invitations mistake- insufficient postage. What should I do?

Emily, on September 7, 2016 at 11:18 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

I'm now 110% aware of how obvious it is that I should have done a little research before sending my invitations, so please don't give me that pointer Smiley sad

I get married in 6.5 weeks. Invitations went to the post office yesterday (and a few stragglers today) which was already cutting it close, and now I am panicking and sobbing and super embarrassed because my 5x5 envelopes only have standard postage.

Has anyone else made this mistake? I know the outlook isn't good, but is it more likely they'll be returned to me or delivered to the recipients and marked "insufficient postage?"

I'm freaking out because My recipients having to pay would be super embarrassing, but I read that "return to sender" mail could take weeks, and if that's the case there's no way they'll get to the recipients on time after I have to readdress and resend them. Should I go ahead and order more invitations and send them or just wait it out? Please tell me someone else has made this huge mistake before Smiley sad

Well it all depends on how heavy your invites are (and/or how much stuff you have in the envelopes). I just had the single-page invitation with an internal envelope with the RSVP and standard postage was sufficient. You could be freaking out over nothing.

It goes by the weight, not the size I believe. I could be wrong though.

I'm confused. Are you sure you didn't put enough postage or just assuming?

Mail got returned to me due to insufficient postage after 3 weeks. I was pissed.

It goes by both size and weight. Square envelopes, like the 5x5's will cost a little extra in postage. OP, in my experience, if something doesn't have enough postage, they return it to the sender, rather than charging the recipient. I also experienced a quick turn around time with this, but this I believe is mostly dependent on your local mail handler.

Well, I bought a card for a friend's wedding gift this evening. By chance, it was a square card and in the corner of the envelope there was a note about needing special postage. Since my invitations were squares, I looked it up to see if that was a thing, and apparently all square envelopes require an extra 21¢, regardless of weight. :/

Squares are extra. If you put squares into a regular envelope you can send them with regular - I only know because when I bought a square card at Hallmark they gave me an extra envelope to mail it in. Smiley sad I don't have any advice but I would assume if you can't catch the post office before they've mailed them that they'll be returned to you.

Square envelopes are extra. Maybe go to your local post office first thing in the morning. They may not have processed forward since not enough postage.

Eta- and then you could just put the extra postage on all of them.

My invites were bigger as well. They measured mine & weighed. I had to get 68 cent stamps.
