Hydrangeas in August?

Miss S., on May 27, 2014 at 12:04 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

Hey ladies,

is anybody else using hydrangeas in their flower arrangements? I have read some horror stories about them wilting pretty fast, which freaks me out a bit. My florist didn't mention anything when I met with her a few months ago. However, I plan on having another appointment with her the beginning of July. But I am at a point, where I think about scratching the hydrangeas for anything that doesn't allow them to be in the water at all times.

There are tons of horror stories about hydrangeas, and honestly, if they're not properly prepped, handled and hydrated, they will die very quickly. Your florist is a professional, and she knows how to prep and hydrate the stems so that they will not wilt.

I'm using them I was freaking out as well but apparently they wrap them in tissue paper to keep them wet. I'm meeting with my florist 6/14 so I'll let you know what she tells me!

Awesome thanks. I just emailed my florist, too, to make an appointment for July. I also asked her how she felt about the hydrangeas in August.... She is an amazing florist who has been in business for a long time. So, I trust her knowledge; however, I also don't want wilting flowers at my wedding Smiley winking

Don't do it!! We had hydrangeas in our bouquets for my best friends wedding last august and before we even walked down the aisle they were completely wilted. I've heard and seen so many bad stories with these flowers. I love them so mine will be silk :-)

Thanks Shannon :/ I am thinking about scratching them out of the bouquets and the ceremony decorations (a stem was supposed to be tied into the chair knot on the ceremony site) but will leave them in my table arrangements since they will be in the water at all times and in the ACed building.

Wow I didn't know this about hydrangeas, they are in my bouquets and centerpieces as well. Please keep us updated!

(I hope I will be ok, even though it's a July wedding, it's all indoors!)

Jillandbill, as far as the research I have done, hydrangeas are ok as centerpieces, as long as they are in clean water at all times and in an air-conditioned room. You really only have to worry about bouquets, or anything that is not in the water all the time (like my idea to tie a hydrangea into the chair sash at my ceremony).

We used hydrangeas for our Aug wedding and they were fine. We did have a professional florist who did all of them.

One of my good friends was married July 27th of last year and she had a lot of hydrangea in our bouquets and her centerpieces....the centerpieces held up fine and look beautiful and the bouquets were looking pretty sad after the bridal party photos...they went through some rough time after all the picking up and putting down during the session.

Agree with the water advice. They have to stay in water. My florist told me this immediately. I was surprised to see how real the hydrangeas looked. So that's why I'm ok with it. I wasn't planning on having silk flowers. Ask your florist to see a sample!
