Hyphenated middle name?

Emma, on December 16, 2020 at 3:41 PM Posted in Married Life 0 10

Hello everyone! Just looking for some opinions- when my parents got married, they hyphenated their last name and passed it down to me. I am planning on taking my future husband's last name, but completely losing my last name makes me a little sad. Would it be weird to make my current last name my middle name, which would mean I have a hyphenated middle name? Wondering what other people with hyphenated maiden names have done!

So make your current last name your middle name and do what with your current middle name? Because your current last name is hyphenated now right? Unless I read that wrong.

My middle name isn't hyphenated, but my mom made her maiden name my middle name! In the Philippines, it's common practice for the woman's maiden name to become her middle name, so it's not unheard of to do what you're wanting to do!

I think it'll be fine. If that's what you want to do, and don't want to lose your last name, then go for it! I'm toying around with the idea of making my current middle and last name my hyphenated middle name once I get married. I just love both of my parents AND both my middle and last names, and like you, I would hate to lose them.

Yes! Sorry I didn't really explain it well. Make my current last name my middle name and just lose my middle name. But because my current last name is hyphenated, I would have a hyphenated middle name.

You can pick anything you want. I've met women who ditched the middle name they were given at birth to switch out with their maiden names but that usually requires a visit to a judge because they are drastically altering the name on their birth certificate. Changing just your last name after marriage is not complicated in comparison.

I personally wouldn't do that, but do whatever suits you.

I made my last name my middle name along with another middle name so I will have two. My husband was not a fan of hyphenated names and of course I wanted his but it was important to keep my maiden name too.

When I was doing my student teaching, I had a 6th grader who was named "Coors" after the beer. You can name yourself whatever you want.

I think ditching your original middle name and moving your currently hyphenated birth last name to the middle name position and taking on your husband's last name as your own makes perfect sense. I don't see any issue with that at all.

You can literally change your name to whatever you want after you get married. I think "First Current-Middle Married" is completely fine!
