i am confused, how does the floral storage and arrangement work?

Sweekriti, on July 26, 2021 at 12:52 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 9

How does a florist make sure that only fresh flowers arrive at the wedding? How long before should the flowers arrive for my wedding? Can I order the flowers 2-3 days before my wedding and make sure my floral decor person stores them well?

You should speak to a florist to confirm availability WELL before your wedding. They need to be booked just as any other vendor.

Generally (in Australia at least) markets are held on Wednesdays and Fridays, so they would order the flowers required for your arrangements and bouquets well in advance (maybe even months, if they are very popular and not many are available - specific colours of roses, for eg) and would collect their pre-ordered supplies on the day closest to your wedding day (ie, if your wedding was a Thursday, they might pick them up at the Wednesday markets, or the Friday ones for a Saturday wedding).

They would then make the arrangements up the night before or morning of, depending on how far away they would need to deliver them from your venue, as well as the type of arrangements you want. (Some things must be made on site for various reasons). They would generally be kept refrigerated until the last moment.

If the florist is a professional, they have it all down to a science. It take time for the buds to open, them to recover from shipping, and assembling takes time too.
Look for reviews of florists and ask around for recommendations, that sort of thing.

Your florist should be taking care of how the flowers get there and ordering and arranging them. All you should have to do is tell her where and when they need to be. You should find a florist well in advanced. Some are booking up a year out now.

How do I know then what is the actual wholesale price of the flowers? The florist must be adding some margin to the cost of wholesale flowers. Isn't it possible that I arrange the flowers at a wholesale price and deliver it to my florist at an appropriate date for making floral arrangements and bouquets?

This might cut my cost a bit.

I'm glad I could help. To address this question though,

this... isn't a thing. If anything the florist can get much better wholesale rates than you, based on long standing relationships with their growers. (Unless you yourself are a grower, or have a friend/family member who is and who will gift you the flowers for free.)

You reduce your floral budget by changing the type and quantity of flowers and greenery you use (ie, switching out expensive, rare flowers for cheaper, similar looking variants or using larger, cheaper types of greenery that covers more footage for less), doing double duty with some items (ie, an arrangement used for the ceremony is brought inside to decorate the cake table or similar) and reducing the number of arrangements and the complexity of the design.

There are other things that impact cost - sometimes venues give florists limited windows to work on site, which can be as little as an hour. In these cases, if your arrangements cannot be made offsite - for example, a hanging installation that needs to be attached to the ceiling - then the only option the florist has is to bring more assistants in to help complete the work in that window. They need to pay each of those workers an appropriate wage.

I would urge you to ask some florists for a quote based on what you're looking to have them make, and then working with the one you like best to make alterations to your vision to bring the cost down to be in line with your budget.

You totally make sense. It is just hard for me to make alterations in my vision of the perfect wedding 🙈. That is why I was looking for a way to be directly in touch with the growers and negotiate on the price of flowers. After a discussion with my florist and researching on the quantity of flowers needed, I could place the order directly with growers according to what is available during my wedding season.

Or at least I could compare which is cheaper- letting the florist take care of everything or I take care of the getting the flowers while my florist does the floral arrangements.

    Thanks
