i can’t resize my engagement ring

Marley, on April 18, 2019 at 3:02 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 8
It’s a long story, but I ended up with a BEAUTIFUL platinum plated sterling silver engagement ring. I love it. But I can’t resize it. Every jeweler I’ve taken it to has said no due to the plating.

It was a last minute purchase by my fiance and the receipt is long gone (he’s since moved to another country for his PhD) because it was supposed to temporarily replace the ring I was SUPPOSED to get, that I am no longer taking (family heirloom, just doesn’t mean the same since he did propose with it).

Ive been wearing it with a sizer on the back, but wedding bands look funky with it on there and don’t sit flush.

My options are deal deal with it being funky, wear it too big and pray I don’t lose it, or I’ve found wedding bands that are in a bridal set that I like more than the solo ones. I could wear my original ring on my right hand where the spacer won’t matter, and a new set on my left?

I dont know. I have so many thoughts and I’m not sure what to do. Any advice would be appreciated!

I have the same issue with my engagement ring. It’s a solitaire and they won’t resize it one because it could weaken the setting so the diamond could come loose and two because the band is so thin they wouldn’t be able to make it look smooth where they cut and resized it. I’ve been wearing it with a sizer. My wedding is also too big lol. So I bought a sizer on amazon that’s meant for a wider ring and I can’t fit both rings in the sizer and they lay flat next to each other. I’ve also heard about people getting little bumps added to the ring when it can’t be resized. I think the option of wearing it on your right hand could work if you want to. But play around some more and see what else is out there. I bet there’s probably a solution for resizing it.

A solitaire is the easiest type of ring to resize. Have you taken it to a few other jewelers? My family is in the jewelry business, and I have never heard of a solitaire ring being difficult to resize for that specific reason. Granted, it's only recommended that a ring be resized only 1-2 sizes up or down max. I don't know how many sizes down you need to go. A skilled jeweler should be able to get it straight, unless your ring is only like 1mm thin or something like that.

Also, yeah, you can get little bumps on the inside of the ring to basically add as permanent sizers.

That’s what I thought originally! I honestly didn’t see how it could be so difficult as there’s only one stone. They said it could bend the prongs causing the stone to possibly come loose. Maybe I’ll try a couple other places to get more opinions. I think it would only need to go down like a half size. I’m so glad you said this lol. I was kind of just set on wearing a ring sizer for awhile. And the band is pretty darn thin but honestly if it’s a little unsmooth where you can’t see it then it really wouldn’t bother me that much.

I mean, technically, yes, doing anything to any ring can bend the prongs (sleeping in it could bend the prongs), but a competent jeweler should be able to easily do it without that happening. I guess it depends on if they said "hey, this is just a warning as a possibility" vs they strongly caution against doing it. A half size will not disrupt the structural integrity of the ring.

Did you get this situation with the ring resolved, Marley? Were any jewelers able to help?

Yes! A place in our mall was able to do it, I'll just need to get it re-dipped before the wedding. It's silver, so it's tarnishing just a bit where they had to size it.

I'm so happy you got it sorted! How has the wedding planning been coming along otherwise? What are you working on at the moment?
