i can't sit in my dress!

WILLBeMcCulley, on June 20, 2018 at 3:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 31
Any suggestions on reception attire? I chose a mermaid dress and its gorgeous! But....no one told me to sit down in my dress before saying yes🤦🏽‍♀️ I think I'll write a book...."Sit Down in Your Dress BEFORE You Say Yes...and other advice for wedding planning"

My final fitting was last week and it fits wonderfully! I had my corset on and got in the dress...and I went to sit in a chair and couldn't exxxxxactlyyyy bend enough to do anything other than "perch" in the chair lol. I'm not sure whether its my corset(as I wear it often and owned it before the dress) or the combination of both? Either way i'm about 38 days from the wedding...sooooo I need suggestions!

Help?

Can a seamstress let it out in the hips at all?

Just to confirm the dress is a mermaid and not a trumpet or fit and flare? If so what type of chair are u sitting in? I wear waist trainers all the time and that alone can be very uncomfortable if you are sitting in the wrong type of chair. Then having a mermaid dress on top of that you'll feel like if you sit back like it's going to pop.

I ordered my dress a size up for this very reason. The 12 fit wonderfully, but i have hips for days. Sat down and thought i would suffocate. The 14 will be way to big up top but i need it for my hips.

My alterations place actually taught me how to sit haha. I tried at home and couldn't figure it out but when they showed me it was like magic and I was sitting!

Oh no! Every time I see someone asking for advice before trying on dresses I always make sure to remind them to sit down. I would find a comfy cute dress to change into for the reception. I did wedding photography and saw soooo many brides miserable trying to eat with their guests because they couldn't really sit down.

So we ordered a 16 initially I believe. I lost some pounds, so she took it in a bit for me. But honestly I never even thought to sit down until that final try on 🤦🏽‍♀️ so it doesn't feel too tight but trying to bend into the chair that was at davids and it was plastic lol, I almost slid out of it. So I just kinda perched lol. And actually, it is a waist trainer and not a corset.

They didn't... the seamstress just kinda watched me perch and never said anything. I guess my attempt at hiding the fact I felt like I was going to slide to the floor was convincing🤷🏽‍♀️

I guess I should have spoken up lol

I love it! That’s at David’s Bridal? I’m so glad I came upon this discussion cause I would have never thought to sit either lol. I’m not trying on dresses for a while, but I like the whole mermaid/ trumpet look. Hopefully I remember to sit down when I try them on lol

Mine said to treat it like when you see men hiking their dress pants up as they sit down (like mid/low thigh spot). It definitely bunches everything up but works for sitting. Just need a few tugs after standing back up to be situated again.

Yikes! There was a post last fall I'll never forget from a bride who didn't realize until she went to get on the trolley from her ceremony site to the reception site that she couldn't sit down in her dress.... (She dressed at the ceremony site, so she'd never tried to sit down in her dress before that....) In her BAM she talked about how awkward it was all night to not be able to sit to eat or for anything else. She looked gorgeous in her dress, but it definitely created stress for her on the day-of.

If you really cannot sit, you may want to ask your alterations people if they can let your dress out just a little in the hips/thighs. Also, I have seen brides post that if they lifted their skirt up a couple inches so there was a little "slack" at the hips/thighs, they were able to sit, then they just adjusted the skirt back down when they stood up, so, if you haven't yet tried that, give it a shot! Good luck!

When I tried on a mermaid style dress the woman at the store told me to pull it up off my hips a little before sitting down. It helped a lot but in the end I went with another dress. Maybe that will help a bit??
