i did my hair trial, and i don't like it. What do i do?

Sonya, yesterday at 4:08 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 4

So we got engaged in February and our wedding is in October this year. I had my first hair trial two weeks ago and it did not go well. I ended up having her take down my hair and she rescheduled the trial for another day so we could try again. I went back this past weekend and we had the same outcome. My hair looked nothing like I requested. I was so upset leaving the salon, I cried the whole way home.

I have a horrible time telling people "no" or standing up for myself so I just smiled and said thanks. But now I am regretting it. I feel like I will not be happy with my hair on my wedding day but I don't know how to tell her. I am also worried that I will not be able to find another hairstylist this close to the wedding.

Any advice would be appreciated as I am freaking out over here!

Maybe start by reflecting on what you liked and didn't like about what happened last time? I also recommend picking out a backup style or two that you might like in case you change your mind about it

Are there any minor adjustments or tweaks that she could make so that it turns out how you want? Or did the whole style just not match what you envisioned? My first thought was to suggest doing another trial and being more vocal about what you don't like, but since you've done two trials already and neither one turned out the way you wanted, I would start looking for another stylist instead. You shouldn't have to change your desired hair style based on the stylist, but also keep in mind that styles often turn out a little differently than how they appear in inspiration photos, so it might help to try out a couple different styles at your trial. Search for another stylist and do a trial with them before booking. If it turns out well, then book that stylist. I would also wait to cancel on your current stylist until you find another one whose work you are happier with.

The whole style was wrong. I am going for a loose "boho" low bun, and she kept doing a slick/tight bun. I told her a few times it was too tight, and that I wanted some pieces hanging out, but I don't think she was truly understanding what I was saying so I figured showing her the inspo pics would help but they did not. At this point, I want to find someone else who may have a little more experience and understanding of the style I am going for.

Unfortunately, I had to sign a contract with her before I even did a trial so I'm wondering how I go about canceling with her and going with someone else. I'm also a nervous wreck about how to tell her.

That makes sense - in that case, I think booking with someone else would be the best option. I recommend signing a contract with another stylist first before cancelling your current stylist, just in case. When cancelling your current stylist, I would say something like, "I appreciate your efforts in both hair trials! However, after consideration, your work doesn't quite capture the style that I am looking for, so I decided to switch to a different stylist. I am requesting cancellation of my contract with you."

Depending on the cancellation clause in your contract, you might still owe her some or all of the full amount, and you'll also most likely lose your deposit (if you paid a deposit), so you might want to also add in something the acknowledges the penalties that the contract defines for cancellation. Something like: "From the contract, I understand that I won't be refunded my deposit" or "From the contract, I understand that I will still owe $[amount] in the event of cancellation."
