I don't want DJ dance floor lights, is that weird?

mel, on September 20, 2016 at 3:52 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

I've specifically chosen an outdoor romantic venue with string lighting and might add paper globe lights around the dance floor. I think neon colored DJ lights are cheesy. Am I making a mistake? Am I being too picky?

Dance floor lighting is not mandatory for a wedding...if you don't like it, don't have it.

I don't think those are usually just included with a DJ package (not any I've seen). Lighting like that is usually an add-on, either through the DJ or a separate rental. It's fine to skip it. No reason for your reception to have club lights if you don't want them. It's not weird.

Nope, perfect sense. I have an outdoor venue as well and refuse to do them.

Hi melissa, welcome to WW! Make sure to upload a picture for your avatar (instead of the default icons) so that we can get to know you and tell you apart from all the other posters.

Not at all! This is just a personal preference thing. You can absolutely skip additional lighting!

Totally not cheesy. We haaaaate the techno-club vibe. We picked a classy wood-panelled country club for our reception specifically so it wouldn't feel like a cheap party scene. We're probably doing bistro lights/Edison bulb strings instead.

I think the lights draw people to the dance floor, just like it would it would in a club. It adds to the environment with the music and lights. But it's up to you.

I didn't want that either, I don't think it's weird at all. That look just would have been out of place at our venue...we wanted lighting but not the look of a nightclub. Instead we had our DJ bring the set-up for a more romantic mirror-ball look and I really like the way it turned out. We also had uplighting throughout the ballroom so that added to the ambiance as well when the lights were dimmed.

I'm not a fan either. It's an extra that definitely isn't needed.

I have a former military family member who suffers from PTSD, and at my cousin's wedding he had a really hard time with all of the lights and what not. When we meet with our dj to make final plans, we will be asking them to forgo any of the strobe type lighting so I'm with you there lol. I think as long as the music is good and booze is flowing we will have a great time Smiley smile

Nope, you're not making a mistake! The colored lights, especially the pin dots or twirling strobes make for horrendous editing! If the DJ has them on, I ask that they be turned off for the 1st Dance, FOB and MOG Dance. Yuk.
