I fell in love with a dress... BUT no one likes it

Although I pictured myself in a huge ballgown I fell in love with this fitted mermaid style dress. My mom loved the dress but she is pretty much the only one who liked it. Although I pictured myself in a huge ballgown I fell in love with this fitted mermaid style dress. My mom loved the dress but she is pretty much the only one who liked it. FMIL wants me to keep looking and my bridal party has seen the dress just in photos and wants me to keep looking. Has any other bride came across this predicament? What were your experiences if you had?

I've attached a photo of me with the dress as well as the model wearing the dress so you could see a better view of the train.

I think your dress is one thing in the wedding where you are truly the only one that has to love love love it! You really have to feel amazing! Everyone else will be concerned about food, booze, weather, seating....get the dress that makes you happy! For real, I don't even like mermaid dresses, and I love that dress!

    I think it's fun!!!

I think the difference is the tulle on the model you have on hasn't been tamed at all- it's sticking STRAIGHT UP- where as the model picture- ti's a little more subdued and less in your face- even though it's volume- with some relaxation- I suspect the one you get will be a little more angled down then straight up or out and will freak people out less.

It's certainly loud- but honestly- I just did the same thing (thread's same page as this one currently LOL) - I bought a dress I really didn't want and I was so upset I thought I was going to massively regret it and I thought everyone would hate it. But it makes me smile- and it should make you smile to- and if it makes you smile and you are happy- then eff them and wear it.

The drama is fun- so if it's you and fits you and makes you happy- DOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT Smiley laugh

I kind of love the extra tulle + train- you see a lot with one or the other. it's fun. Smiley smile

That dress looks amazing on you! And I love it! I don't think I could pull it off, but if it's what you want, you should have it! Everyone will love it when they see how happy you are in it on your wedding day Smiley smile

People also look for different things in wedding dresses. Some people focus on the elements of the dress, others on how it fits the bride's figure, others on if it overwhelms the bride. I think the dress itself is gorgeous, but all I see is the dress, not your beautiful face. It is a bit "distracting" in that regard. However, I am one of those people that thinks this is most important. Go with what you like and what feels right on you.

It's not my style at all, but that doesn't matter at all. All that matters is that you feel awesome in it. That you never want to take it off. Then you know it's the right dress. Honestly, other peoples opinions don't matter on what you wear any other day so why should it matter on the most important dress you'll ever buy? You should feel your most lovely on your wedding day so if this dress makes you feel that way then that's all that matters.

On many elements of wedding planning you do have to take your guests into consideration. You have to make sure they are well fed. You have to make sure they are comfortable. Etc, etc. But your dress is one place where you really can say "It's your wedding, do what you want." Your dress won't affect anyones enjoyment of your wedding so provided you aren't planning on going naked (which could affect guests comfort quite a bit, lol) you can wear what you please.

Katy my first comment to the consultant "I do not like the mermaid style." Well that didn't last long haha!

JoRocka - they let me know once the tulle is steamed it'll look more like the model than the sample dress I tried on. Can't wait for us to rock our non-traditional dresses Smiley winking

You pull that off splendidly, for one. It looks better on you than the model.

I would probably keep looking, but keep this one in mind. Go to a few more shops, but if you keep thinking about this dress, then go for it.

But it also wouldn't hurt to try on a few more just in case you find something you would rather wear. :o)

I think you look great! And if you love it, that's all that matters. I had the same issue when I picked my dress last month. I first went, I went with my FMIL, and 3 BM. They loved it and cried. And it was a dress I never thought I would pick (I always thought I wanted a fitted/trumpet style). So I took my mom and grandmother back to show off the ballgown- they hated it. I cried. Took it off thought the day was wasted. And then I thought it over.. it is our day! (As brides!) hopefully no do overSmiley smile. I went with what I loved! Congrats!

I personally wouldn't wear it but if you love it, and if your mom loves it (trust me about moms, my mom has said many times she will be putting her input regarding my wedding) then that's amazing! I showed my BM pictures of what dresses I wanted, and she was being super-persnickety about them. I want a lace, off-shoulder 3/4 sleeve dress, trumpet style and she said it looked like "old" style. But, we have different tastes! Like everyone else is saying, when it comes to the other aspects of the wedding, it's going to affect everyone (food, music, being comfy, etc.) but your dress? It's not going to affect it. So go for it!

It's a beautiful dress, and not many people could pull it off but YOU DO! It looks gorgeous on you. Go with what makes you feel happy and beautiful. For me I knew my dress was the one because I couldn't stop smiling and looking in the mirror when I was wearing it.

I love it! And it looks great on you! I say go for it! I know it can be rough when others close to you don't agree but as the others have said this is YOUR dress not theirs.
