i Hate my Parent’s Wedding Gift

Melissa , on August 3, 2022 at 4:03 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 5
My parents got my husband and I a buffet console table as our wedding gift. First, I do appreciate all gifts that were given to us. However, this piece of furniture does not match any of our current furniture or my style in any way. This is not something I would have picked out for our home and I do not have anywhere to put it. I have attempted to put it together to make it work so I do not upset anyone. The furniture is very cheaply made, I’ve already dedicated 5 hours of my time to build it and it is still not fully put together.

I do not have a close relationship with my parents and it makes me not want to keep this piece of furniture that I truly do not want. I honestly do not know what to do but it has been sitting in our house for almost a year. Not that it was expected, but, my parents did not pay for my wedding or contribute anything. In fact, my mother was terrible to me from my engagement, to the wedding, and even now. I honestly do not know what to do with it and would be made to feel guilty if I got rid of it. Advice?

Just get rid of it. Toss it, donate it, sell it. If I held onto every gift I've received through out the years, I would be a hoarder. You don't have to explain anything or tell them. It's a gift, not a life long commitment

If it causes you that much stress, you are free to donate it to Goodwill or have a yard sale and get something more to your tastes. You also are not required to set it up in your main living area if you prefer it out of sight.

Your parents only have as much emotional power as you allow them.

Free yourself, and get rid of it. If it makes you feel better, maybe find a charity to donate it to!

Do you have a photo of it? Maybe we can brainstorm a DIY to turn it into something else...

Honestly this is why I am doing a "please no gifts. if you must contribute, here is our honeymoon fund" registry. We have everything we need and I don't want to end up with stuff I will feel guilty throwing out.
