jodie, on May 12, 2012 at 6:07 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

I am making my aisle using the sheppard hooks which will hold different color paper lanterns. The hooks are black and i was wondering if i could paint them white? Has anyone tried that before?

I haven't done that, but are they metal? I don't see why you couldn't spray paint them white.

I haven't tried it but I don't see any reason as to why you could not paint them. Go for it! And then take pictures of the finished product and share with us Smiley smile

Yes you can spray paint them, I would recommend trying outdoor white spray paint, that way there is less of chance of them chipping.

I would prime them first. There is spray primer and then paint them white.

You're welcome, Also, you can buy a spray paint glaze if you choose, you don't have to but I always use it to keep the paint on better. it's not necessary if it'll be inside though.

Absolutely you can paint them. You might want to give them a quick sanding first just to make sure the surface is rough enough so that the paint will not easily flake off. Just use sandpaper you can buy at Home Depot, Lowe's or Ace hardware.

I also will be painting my black shepherd's hook white. Don't you just love how they look on either side of the aisle?

Prime it first with white primer spray paint and than use the outdoor spray paint to cover it. The primer will adhere to it just fine without sanding it.

All the ladies are right, your choice, either prime them, then paint or sand then paint with outside paint.

I would just use a rustolium spray paint. It is made for metal. We have some old metal rocking chairs that we sprayed a few years ago and it doesn't rub off or anything.

Yep yep! i know a friend who did just that! HOWEVER she primed them and the spray painted them white and decided teh white looked tacky... so if you like the lantern look i would see what they look like on one spray painted hook before painting them all! good luck love

FH thinks I am dangerous with a can of spray paint! You should have no problem painting them. I have just this weekend painted my cake stand, flowergirl's baskets, and trellis. Just paint them in an open area, stand them up in the ground, because if you lay them flat to paint them, they could end up sticking to the paper underneath.

I've got them all over my yard for everyday use - spray paint them with rusteolum brand paint and you won't need to prime or sand. :-) It costs a little more at Home Depot but worth the time saved.
