I have ring envy

Kiera, on July 1, 2010 at 1:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 66

I feel terrible. I know I should love my ring because he gave it to me and all, but I'm look at almost every other ring with envy. Because, I know he has no emotional attachment, I'm already thinking of doing an upgrade later down the line...I've only had it three months. Eeek. I picked out the setting, but I wish it was bigger. I'm soooo shallow and horrible. I had to tell someone. Agh don't judge me! Maybe, now that I've "said it outloud" I'll get over it. =)

I think everyone feels that. I know every time I go to one of my husband's work functions, even HE feels it. He works in finance with a bunch of rich snobby people with 4ct rings, and he even gets a complex lol.

Just try not to compare, and be happy with YOUR ring.

Oh, we can be shallow together because I feel the same way!! FH doesn't understand why I want a bigger ring, he thinks a ring is a ring and means the same thing no matter how big it is (which is very sweet)!

I can relate... I don't want a bigger diamond, but I wouldn't mind a different setting. But I've settled with it by picking out my own band. Smiley smile

I'm not the only one! Yay! I don't feel so bad then. =) Yeah I plan on picking my band. FH is very socially conscious and doesn't even like the idea of diamonds and giving to the industry. Plus, he thinks its an outrageous cost/size ratio, which I agree but......I can't help it!!!

Lol, I feel the same way. FS gave me my great-grandmother's ring from 1912 (he surprised me with it). I love the history, but I find myself drooling over simple solitaires. My diamond is kinda lost in the ornate filigree design. I'm also worried I'll damage it, since it's so old. I'll never be able to wear a band with it either. Whew. I said it. Now maybe I'll get over it too Smiley smile

I feel weird about my ring right now cause my actual one is being custom made and I have a stand in...the stand in look pretty much the same but the diamond is smaller, but I dont feel attached to it at all since I know its not really *mine* Smiley sad Im hoping to get mine next week

I think that once you go through the ceremony and you see his face as he's watching you walk down the aisle and when he looks into your eyes as he puts that ring on your finger...you will have a sentimental attachment to the ring and it will mean so much more to you!

I feel the same exact way. He picked it out and there is love behind it but its just so tiny..on plane..than I feel bad and reassure myself with the umn...peni$ theory and I feel better LOL. You know the size of the ring reflects the size of his.... and weather or not hes compensating kind of like the guys in big trucks theory LOL..it makes me feel better

This is why I'm soooooooooooooo incredibly glad that I got to pick out my ring. I have no envy what-so-ever because I have the ring that I absolutely adore and love. I was surprised by the proposal--I had no idea when that would happen or that he got me the ring that I fell in love with. Eventually down the road we'll update my main diamond into a larger one, but that's not a huge concern of mine.

I'm not judging you by any means--just saying that this is exactly why I'm glad I absolutely love mine and got to pick it out. And I agree with Nichole completely!!

My FH picked out my ring, but he did listen to the one requirement I had: I wanted an emerald. I LOVE my ring. It's probably not the ring I would have picked out, but it really is the perfect ring. And I think it is absolutely gorgeous. I suppose if I look at it with an overly critical eye, it might be conceived as "small." But then, the design of the ring just fits my hand so well. But the biggest parts for me are, 1. he gave this to me in love and the desire to be his wife, and 2. he remembered an off-comment I said to him years ago! (Regarding the emerald) What could I possibly be envious of? Mere size? It's the size of the man's heart that matters, not the size of the diamond he puts on your finger.

I picked the ring and diamond, and HE is the one who wishes I had a bigger one! I love mine, and while it isn't as big as some others, I am constantly fascinated by the clarity and near colorless-ness. It is a gorgeous diamond!

I picked out exactly what I wanted and he obliged. There are many beautiful rings out there so I will tell you what is posted on my page...comparison is the thief of joy. I know it can sting a little but you'll get there to what you want. Hang in there

Michele I love the way you put it. I picked out my ring as well. I went with the smallest size of the design (it is like 5/8 total) because FH picked a job he wanted even though he knew it wasn't going to pay as well as many others would (he is a corrections officer). I did not want him spending an arm and a leg just to buy me a ring. Now that I have it...I keep hearing all of these horrible comments. A soon-to-be family member even recently got engaged and her ring goes almost to her knuckle it is so big. And the comment that was made was "We were going to get something better than her (me) ring, my woman deserves much better than THAT." Um...isn't it the man that means the most? It is a simple piece of jewelry that is given out of love. Yes, sometimes I would love a different one or a bigger one...but I also hate gaudy things. I truly think that those who get a big ring just to show it off are trying to compensate for other things that are lacking in their relationship.

I had been eyeing a ring at the jewlers for months! I even had them right the code for it on a business card. I left that card on the coffee table hoping he'd find it and go get that ring. He didn't. But honestly, I love his ring so much more. The other one was bigger, fancier, and probably more expensive... but it wasn't the one he picked for me. I love my ring.

See my profile for a pic of my ring. I love it. I love that he gave it to me. And he has even stated that he will get me whichever one I want. I've tried on $49,000.00 engagement rings (I was bored with some girlfriends) and I still resorted back to mine. Not saying I would EVER let him spend that much on me...but it is sweet that he would at least work his butt off to get me something 1.5 carats or so. Which, knowing me, I would say it is too big and go back to mine. =)

@ least your honest about it...

I for one have never wanted to change my ring. I absolutely love it-- its a great size and the setting it pretty. Everywhere I go where someone catches a glimpse of my hand, I get a compliment. But there's always going to be someone who tries to ruin that for you-- right after we got engaged I had someone say that it would be possible for me to upgrade the ring if I wanted. I was like really? I'm like overjoyed right now and you're trying to kill it? (don't worry, they didn't). I know people who have upgraded/changed their rings and I find that sad. To me, it says that the ring your FH gave you has no real meaning unless it's bigger, has a different cut, etc. I hated every time I had to hear about a certain upgrade. But that's just my two cents.
