i love mermaid dresses but I'm paranoid that it would work with my body type

DanteNicole, on March 31, 2020 at 10:06 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

I'm a curvy, I have large hips, large butt and medium bust. These aspects I'm proud of, however I have a large stomach. I'm working out to get rid of it, it's hard--(so work out tips is appreciated for brides who went through this lol). I'm self conscious about my stomach and I want to look my best on my wedding day, but my favorite type of wedding dress is a mermaid, but I'm not sure it would work on my body type. They say for brides who are pear shaped it's best to wear an A-Line or Ball gown, I'm not a fan of those dresses. My fiancee has hinted that he would prefer a dress that shows off.....my assets lol...and I'm not sure if a A-Line or Ball gown can do that. Luckily my wedding is in a year but I still have to try it on.

I’m shaped like you! Do a body shaper where it’s like spandex without boning. This helps a ton. You could also do like a waist cincher kind of thing but it has wiring and is not as comfortable.

Have you tried on dresses yet? If not, don’t count yourself out simply because of standard recommendations. Once you have an opportunity to try on different styles of dresses, you’ll be able to decide from there. I agree with PP, shapewear will help in those areas that you don’t like — regardless of the dress style. And once you try on dresses, you may be pleasantly surprised at what you actually like.

When you’re able to, go and try on all different silhouettes! Don’t listen to those silly recommendations for different body types because everyone is so different. You might be shocked by what you end up liking on your body! Good luck and I’m sure you’ll look beautiful.

Girl try one on! I found David's Bridal shaper/torsolette to be a lot of help, and I was shocked at how good I look in my dress with it on. Don't rule it out just because there's more of you to love- find a dress that suits you and you love! Get that mermaid!

Remember that there are all kinds of different mermaid style dresses as well. One may not flatter as well as another, even if they are the same silhouette, because they might have subtle differences that suit your figure better. So feel free to try on a few different mermaids if you find that's what you want. Also I am told the "Fit&Flare" is kind of a blend of an A-line with a mermaid and may be more forgiving for curvy body types? Could be wrong but that's what I've heard.

When you are able to go try dresses on. Try on all different types and keep an open mind. You very well may fall in love with the perfect mermaid dress that looks amazing on you. But you may also fall in love with a ball gown dress that looks equally amazing on you. You just don’t know until you try them on. Don’t take a bunch of people with you when you go the first time. Just a friend or two for that first try on time so you can see what works and what doesn’t.
    Good luck!!

Definitely go to your appointment in some nice spanx or boned shapewear - it will help you see your vision better (personal experience) as for the tummy, I feel like most people feel the same, I definitely do. I am sure that you will look beautiful in your dress - when you go to try on talk to your consultant about your worry and she may have some options for you too!

As far as dieting - I am doing keto and I have noticed my problem area (tummy and thighs) thinning. There is also a few youtube work out videos geared towards brides like blogilates that you may find helpful for target areas too.

You've got this! We all can't wait to see your dream dress post!!

I feel you on being self conscious about your stomach and wearing a form fitting dress and I also have big hips like you but have always loved the mermaid style. I only tried on one mermaid and it ended up being the one. Mine is a corset dress, so it hides my stomach very well and makes my waist look a little smaller. TRY ONE ON! I’m posting mine so you can see how it looks, but mermaids vary so much in styles too. When I looked, I looked for one that had the skirt start a little higher so it wasn’t so form fitting through my legs and all. You might be surprised once you try one on, I was CONVINCED I was getting a ball gown because I didn’t think a mermaid would look good and I was very mistaken! i love mermaid dresses but I'm paranoid that it would work with my body type 2

Still try them on. Mermaids can vary so much. Also try fit & flare. Sometimes more flattering in curvy brides than mermaid but still gives you a sexy look!
