Idea re: What to Do for Longest Married When Disabled

Leslie, on August 20, 2021 at 1:03 AM Posted in Planning 0 11
I'm hoping someone may have a suggestion for an alternative to an anniversary dance when one of the couple is disabled. My parents, who will be a month shy of 68 years of marriage on my daughter's wedding day, will most certainly be the longest married at the wedding and my daughter really wants to acknowledge them. My dad has lost the mobility of his legs over the past year so they won't be able to dance--which will be tough for them because they were wonderful dancers. Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative to the anniversary dance? Thank you for any ideas you can offer.

Toasts, asking for a speech/blessing from them, or a wheelchair friendly dance-floor, so they can at least move to the music.

I like the above blessing idea or toast. You could also give them long stem roses to honor them.

We're skipping the bouquet toss and will instead be giving the bouquet to my grandma, as the longest married woman. We will probably say a few words about how we wish to top them.Smiley smile

I’d skip the anniversary dance altogether and take a few minutes to acknowledge them and their 68 years. That will be more meaningful than a dance anyway

Is he in a wheel chair? A girl I went to elementary school with recently got married and her dad is in a wheel chair so for the father/ daughter dance they went around in circles with her walking next to him and for part of it she rode in his lap. It was really cute!

Maybe during cake and dessert you could have the MC announce: “If you've been married to your partner for 1 year feed your spouse one bite of cake. If you've been married for 5 years feed your spouse another bite.” This can go on... 10, 20, 30 years... 68 years!

Have the lovely couple sit together snack fan in the middle of the dance floor. He in his wheelchair and her in a chair, holding hands. It will be cute because everyone knows they will be the last ones on the floor. Since they loved to be on the dance floor, I wouldn't take this chance away from them.

If they were once wonderful dancers, I would skip any kind of dance for this altogether as opposed to trying to make a "disability friendly" dance.

Do you know their first dance song? Maybe play it at the reception as a special acknowledgment.

I also like the "give the bouquet to the longest married" couple and encourage (or request) a blessing and an advice-giving moment.

The DJ may also have some great ideas as to a special way to honor them.

Are you set on making it a surprise? You could just ask them if they would like to be on the dance floor or do something different.

68 years!! How wonderful and how fortunate your daughter is to have her grandparents at her wedding. I agree this should definitely be celebrated. It could be something as simple as the dj saying the bride and groom would like spotlight a very special, inspirational couple, etc...and then ask them for their advice.
